Mated to alpha triplets at all-boys school Chapter 134
Ashley pov
“The hunters? You mean the same hunters Constantine mentioned when he was telling me more about the past he and my father had?” I ask, my eyes darting everywhere but at the two men who both look ten years older than a minute ago.
I can't believe this is happening. Can't make myself believe that this is how things are going to go down. If those hunters are half as dangerous as Constantine claimed earlier, I really don't want to meet them. Ever.
My hands start shaking as intense waves of fear surge through my body. Just when I let my guard down, even briefly believe that things will get better, my life has to go down in absolute shitstorm.
The guy who alerted us about the hunters pins me with his glare. “As if you care. The only reason why those men are following us is you. Up until Constantine insisted we save you from the mess you created, we never had any issues with the hunters.” He points a finger at me, jabbing it in the air in an accusatory manner.
I look at the man wide eyed. One, I never asked to be saved. Sure, I'm beyond grateful for everything this man did to get me away from that bastard. But again, I wasn't the one who reached out, I didn't seek them out, and I definitely didn't ask to be saved.
Two, blaming me for something that isn't my fault is downright wrong. I get that there is a reason why everyone's panicking, especially if those hunters are that dangerous, but shifting the blame on someone won't help anyone.
“That's enough!” Constantine roars at his friend. “This is no time to blame someone and indulge into unnecessary arguments. The main priority right now is to get everyone out before the hunters reach us. We need to ensure nobody gets hurt.”
“We wouldn't have a problem like this in the first place if it weren't for the girl,” the man snaps back. He looks so angry, tension is radiating off him in intense waves, so much so that I believe he wouldn't have an issue with attacking me if we were alone.
Seeing how his friend isn't fazed by his words, Constantine stands in front of me, shielding me from the possible danger. “With how you are acting right now, I think she needs to be hidden from you, not the hunters. You can't be completely sure that something is or isn't her fault, just because we haven't seen the hunters around for a while doesn't mean they became less real than they are.”
Constantine has a point. And I don't mean it like he's standing up for me or anything, it's really that he has a point. Just because you don't see something, doesn't mean it isn't real. For fuck’s sake, you don't see air, but you know it's there, and you don't ask for proof either.
“I don't like this, Constantine, I don't like this one bit. Regardless of what you say, I still find it highly suspicious that all of the sudden, right after we take the girl and hide her, the hunters are on our backs.” He argues.
As much as I hate to admit this, the guy, the same as Constantine, has a valid point.
Looking up at my protector, I ponder if I'm willing to put so many lives at risk just to get away from one guy. These bears have been nothing but kind and thoughtful, they embraced me as one of their own, the last thing I want to happen is to put them in harm's way.
“I agree,” I blurt out, catching them both off guard. Constantine and his friend look at me like I just grew another head right in front of their eyes. Funny enough, the friend looks more surprised than Constantine is. “I mean, your friend has a point. It can’t be just a weird coincidence that you take me to the mountains and suddenly, the hunters know everything about your whereabouts.”
“What are you suggesting, Ash? Don't tell me that you have a stupid plan about self-sacrifice or any of that bullshit, because I won't listen. I don't want to hear it.” Constantine growls, spinning on his heel to face me and grabbing my shoulders to shake me.
Once he releases his hold on me, I shrug my shoulders and look into his friends eyes as I speak. “If that's the price I have to pay, that's the prince I'm willing to offer. At the end of the day, I understand that you guys risked a whole lot for me, to get me out of there and I think it would only be fair if I returned the favor. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?”
I expect Constantine to jump in and start arguing, but to my utter surprise, it's his friend who does that, not Constantine.
“Are you crazy, kid? The worst that could happen? I don't know, you would most likely tucking die or some shit. No, you know what, that's not even the worst. We all know that with hunters, death is an easy way out. Those bastards will imprison you, they will use so much wolfsbane on you that you won't be able to think, let alone move, and eventually, they'll sell you off like some circus animal.” With each word his voice grows louder, more aggressive.
Glancing up at Constantine, I let out a shaky breath. “I have no real right to speak here, I know that much, but can I point out that screaming isn't a good idea? Loud voices will do nothing but attract more attention.”
Clearly, some screaming is the last thing everyone's worried about, but it's easier to try to distract them than to listen to what might be written in the cards of my future.
I've never thought that this is how my life might end, but if that's what I need to survive to live a good life, I suppose I'll take what I can get.
