Somehow, I survive the first night in the cell, shivering in the furthest corner of it.

After the stunt the guards pulled off yesterday, I find it hard to move my limbs, let alone the entire body. They kept punching and kicking until I vomited blood, and even then, they laughed and carried on, musing about how I’ll probably heal with the help of my wolf.

Well, news flash to everyone but me, Sam is too weak to help me heal, so I’m on my own with this one.

Still shivering in the dirt, I hear lighter footsteps approach my cell, but pay no attention to them. That is, until someone clears their throat, catching my attention.

In front of my cell stands a beautiful, tall woman with hair as bright as fire and eyes as deep as the depths of the wildest of forests. “Good day, Miss, my name is Giana, I’ll be your personal maid from now on,” she announces with a hint of excitement in her voice.

I can’t help but chuckle and instantly regret it as a wave of pain shoots through my body, starting with ribs and then down my legs. “Funny,” I heave. “A prisoner has a personal maid, that’s unheard of.”

Giana doesn’t appreciate my joke and frowns. “It doesn’t matter if you believe my presence is funny or not,” she huffs and looks over her shoulder at one of the guards, “come along, you brute, I need you to open the cell for me.”

The guard approaches my cell sulking, throwing a warning gaze my way, as if.. As if he’s almost scared that I will let everyone know what happened down here yesterday.

Which, honestly, in itself is ridiculous. Only an idiot wouldn’t see something’s wrong with me, especially with all that blood that’s covering my entire body, soaking through my clothing and sticking the strands of my hair to my forehead.

The door to the cell opens and the maid steps inside, wrinkling her nose in disgust. “I brought your dress,” Giana suddenly announces, seemingly shifting the gear in her brain faster than I can process.

“My dress?” I whisper as I try to sit up and wince in pain, holding a hand over my ribs like that will ever help me get rid of the pain.

“Yes, your dress, silly,” Giana giggles and sets the big box she’s carrying on the stool the guard places next to her. “The prince is organizing Luna’s coronation and after it’s done, he will finally accept you as his mate and mate you. Can you imagine that?” She gushes and fans herself with her hand, seemingly deep in the fantasy land. I’d say that land is twisted, but to each their own, I suppose.

However, if nothing else, her words do earn a reaction from me. Ignoring the pain, I force myself to my feet and support my body against the cold wall, heaving for breath. “What? Why?” Is all I can ask.

Giana looks at me like I’ve lost my mind. Only for a second, though, because soon she busies herself with opening the box and talking more nonsense.

“The king wants our prince to finally take over the throne now that he has found his true, fated mate. But more than that, our beloved king dreams about having grandbabies. They agreed the prince needs an heir as soon as possible,” she giggles and squeals. “Oh, I can’t wait to see tiny paws paddle around here, bring some life into this cold house finally.”

Giana pulls out a disgusting dress out of the box. I don’t know what’s worse, wearing that thing or going through with the king’s plan and mating with his awful little brat of a son.

“I’m not wearing that. Ever. You won’t catch me dead wearing the thing,” I blurt out without thinking about the consequences.

And consequences I receive. Giana just arches and eyebrow and steps aside, letting two guards enter. The men remind me of how much fun they had beating me yesterday, making sure to target the areas on my body with the most damage until I’m on all fours, vomiting more blood.

In the meantime, the maid just stands and grins. “There, I think you should be ready to change into this beautiful gown now, right?”

“I can’t fucking move now, you idiots!” I hiss at them and spit more blood on the ground.

“No problem,” Giana says, almost singing the words. She snaps her fingers and more men appear in the cell, grabbing me, pulling to my feet and ripping off my clothes. “The guards will gladly help you in and out of the clothes,” she beams.

Great, even the maids and servants are just as evil as I remember. Seems like nothing has changed - home, sweet home, indeed.

I feel nothing but anger and humiliation as the guards rip off the last of my clothes, including the underwear and hold me up, completely naked. Giana steps in front of me and hands a guard the dress with a wide grin, “make sure to go extra tight on the corset, we don’t want our prince to think he’s forced to mate a fat pig, right?”

Her coldness of words don’t match the sweetness of her voice, but I know where she’s going with them. By tightening the corset she just ensures I end up in more pain than I already am. Then, my eyes catch a movement. While the guards force the dress on me, Giana grabs some wet wipes and starts roughly rubbing the blood off my skin, ignoring my protests and the sounds of pain.

Their attitude, behavior and everything that is happening now is nothing but another reminder that I can’t stand for this bullshit. I can’t sit back and allow Kaiden to do whatever he pleases, especially since his sick minions think they possess just as much power and right to do so as Kaiden does.

No. I need to find a way to escape this place. And while the idiots that surround me are busy with yet another session of mini torture, I let my eyes roam the cell and the little bit of the hall I can see, looking to see anything that I can use to my advantage.
