Him pov

We're pretty far from our initial goal, so when the night falls over the mountains, we set up a camp and cook some food.

Dominic, the freakish bastard, disappears claiming he needs to feed and returns not long after, claiming he didn't find anything good enough.

The fuck if I know what he eats, but I'm sure he will come and go as he pleases until we leave the camp for good and head deeper into the woods.

It's pissing me off that the prince lied about the location. If that woman in the cabin would have called the cops, we would have gotten away before they arrived, of course, but the cops would definitely have started searching the woods and forced us to leave under the pretense of us being a threat to young women camping.

Sitting in front of the campfire, I scan the faces of the rest of the hunters. None of them seem stressed or too worried about the outcome of this mission.

Technically, they have no reason for worries. The prince sent half of the money first, which I already gave to these men as payment for their service, so none of them will be eager to finish the job now. If money were still on the line, they'd act differently.

Benjamin drops down next to me and lets out a heavy groan, leaning his head against my upper arm. “I'm so tired, damn it. The little prick won't stop calling either.”

I side-glance at him and mouth, “answer the call away from the others.”

He grunts and stands up, grabbing the phone, clutching it in his hand and disappearing somewhere in the bushes.

Occasionally, I can hear a thing or two that he says, but none are loud enough to catch the attention of others or for me to hear clearly.

I become a little uneasy when Benjamin takes too much time to return, but I try to play it off in front of others. The fact that I haven't been the most talkative guy of the group helps me with the task.

About five minutes later, Benjamin reruns, looking pissed beyond belief. Even the rest of the guys notice the shift in his mood, but Benjamin skilfully waves them off by mumbling something about women problems.

Then, he places a hand on my shoulder and tilts his head in the direction he earlier disappeared in. “Mind having a word with me? I need your advice,” he says loudly for everyone to hear.

I nod, stand up and dust off my pants before I follow him into the bushes, feeling like some bloody teenager who's about to do something stupid.

“So?” I ask as soon as we stop and cross my arms in front of my chest to let Benjamin know I'm not joking around anymore.

I need the information he has and I need it fast. No matter what happened, it has to be pretty important if Benjamin is being this sketchy.

And besides, the prince of those beasts isn't known for his kindness. The guy is very well known because of his cunning nature and vile crimes. Thankfully, he kills only within his species, so I really don't give a shit how many so-called innocents are killed off.

“I think the prince is backing out of our deal,” Benjamin sighs and runs a hand through his hair.

I have to bite the inside of my cheek to keep in the screaming I really want to unleash. That moron is impossible. He's fucking psycho.

“Before you say anything, I did warn him that I have legit proof that he hired us, so if he does anything stupid, it backfires on him way worse than it could on us,” Benjamin mutters, cautiously approaching me as he does.

“And what did he say to that? That what you're doing is blackmail and he can't believe you would result in such measures? Or that he will fake his innocence?” I ask through gritted teeth, so fucking ready to drop the mission and visit the prince dearest in person.

“Well, that, yes and no. Technically, he offered a compromise and I kind of pretended that I accepted it,” Benjamin offers me a cheeky grin and brings his hand to the back of his neck to scratch it nervously. “Key word being pretended, don't forget that.”

“Okay, spit it out then. I want to know about this compromise. Who knows, maybe it is better than I assume it is.” I grumble and drop my arms to my sides.

Benjamin shifts his weight from one leg to another and looks around nervously, almost like he's too scared to look directly at me.

Okay, this isn't a good sign at all. This is a whole massive shit sign.

“He wants us to bring the girl to him first. He didn't go into details, but he needs an heir from his fated mate and apparently it's her. The prince has this grand idea of getting her pregnant, tormenting her until she gives birth and then handing over the leftovers. I told him I'm down, but obviously, I'm not. It's your call. And also, I have a feeling he doesn't believe me, so he'll try to flip this on us. Do you have the copy of the contract with the royal seal on?” He asks the last question quietly, making sure the others won't overhear that detail.

“He's not getting the girl,” I insist, my voice a little more aggressive than I initially intended. “The deal was to bring her there, nothing about tormenting her and getting her pregnant. He can't have his fucking cake and eating too. The money he spent is a safety deposit, that's all. Since he's so adamant to step out of the agreement, he's not getting it back. Legally, we have no responsibility to fulfill our part of the deal so we're going with my plan. Is that clear?”

Benjamin grins and all the worry fades from his features for good. “I knew you're not a sellout. Good to know I still have you.”
