Constantine pov

By some miracle, the atmosphere in our little camp is calm, even with the unexpected guest. For hours, Greg has been looking over him, making sure the newcomer doesn’t stir up any trouble.

Sometimes, I doubt my decision to take in the strays. I like being kind and open to second chances, but there are some individuals who can’t be saved. And this guy, the rogue, is one of those individuals. Something about him is very unsettling, which makes me question myself.

I take the last glance at them. Both Greg and the newcomer sit at the campfire, seemingly deep in conversation. The night is still and silent, which could be good in any other situation, but not now.

Right now, it feels like a bad omen. The silence that makes your own breath sound loud, you know?

There’s a faint sound of a thump behind me, so I spin on my heel and rush back inside. Dominic sits up, looking as pained as ever, his posture uncomfortable. His wounds are still raw and look very painful.

I kneel beside him, carefully dabbing at the torn skin with a damp cloth. He winces, trying to avoid my touch, but I try to calm him by whispering soft reassurances. “Stay still, baby,” I murmur. “You need to rest or else you’ll rip these open again.”

Dominic groans in response but settles down. Even his breathing evens out. As I keep cleaning his wounds and re-dressing them, Dominic peers at me through his lashes and grins. I know that mischievous grin - there was a time when I used to hate it, but now, I welcome it. This has to be a sign that he’s getting better.

“You called me baby,” he whispers, catching me off guard.

I didn’t realize that I did. My cheeks flush, but I try to act unbothered as I respond with a weak, “a slip of a tongue, is all.”

He only grins at my response and closes his eyes. I can’t believe that I’m considering this, but somewhere at the back of my mind, my bear keeps whispering that if I calm him again, with a mating bond Dominic could heal much faster. He’s a powerful creature, that’s a fact, but since he’s a hybrid, carried by a human mother, unfortunately the healing abilities are just that - human.

Soon, Greg enters the small building to check up on the progress. We chat a little and I chuckle at his grand idea to hide the supplies and tie the new guy to a tree to ensure he won’t take off with something of value.

“How’s,” he starts and clears his throat. “How’s the asshole doing?”

And again, I’m caught off guard. The last thing I expected is to hear the worry in Greg’s voice. But honestly, that same thing that surprises me is the very reason for the sudden surge of bravery in me. I decide that maybe tossing my idea out there might give me some perspective.

“Not good. He’s healing far too slowly, and if I’m being honest, there’s no progress at all. I see only setbacks with his health. My bear is suggesting we mark him again.” I mumble the last part, half-hoping Greg might ignore it.

“Yeah, sounds good to me.” Greg mutters and starts pacing near the door, his arms crossed tight against his chest. Yeah, something’s telling me he didn’t hear what I said.

I chuckle and shake my head. “You’re going to wear a hole in the floor.” I mutter, trying to break the tension in the room.

Greg doesn’t answer. He stops and his eyes instantly fix on the door, almost like he’s damn near ready to break through it for some reason. But then again, I’m not the only one who’s been on the edge with the arrival of our rogue guest.

My brother, here, has been on the edge even more. He’s expecting trouble and I can’t blame him for that. We have been burned far too many times before and still insist it’s important to help those in need. We could easily get fucked over ten times and give up, but the next person who seeks us out might be in real danger, so we can’t risk turning our backs on them.

“I don’t trust him, man. I mean, look at him. Sure, at the first glance, he looks innocent and unsuspecting, but there’s this look in his eyes. I don’t know, he gives me the creeps,” Greg mutters.

I nod, even though he can’t see it. I fully understand what Greg meant with his words. There are some people who don’t have to say a word or act a certain way to prove they’re trouble. That look in his eyes, however, is something I’m very interested in, so I ask Greg to tell me more.

“It’s stupidly hard to explain, but every time he looks at me, even when the dude smiles, I get these cold chills running down my spine. Like he’s looking at me and all I see in his eyes is extreme hatred. He’s trying to hide it, of course, but it’s still there. I’m not sure if the hatred is for bear shifters or all predators in general, but seriously, he’s giving me the worst vibes.”

Greg starts pacing around again, this time running hands through his hair, clearly too frustrated to speak and explain more. I’m about to tell him to sit and calm down a little when a sound cuts through the night.

It’s a low, mournful call that makes my blood run cold. The bear call. Our brothers.

I’m on my feet even before I realize it, moving too fast for my brain to follow the sudden actions. My heart hammers in my chest with fear as Greg turns to me, his face as white as a ghost. “Greg,” I force the word through gritted teeth, but he’s already looking at me, he already knows.

“Go,” he whispers and almost chokes on the word. “I’ll stay behind, you have nothing to worry about. I will look after Dominic for you, Ash is safe with me and I’m fully capable of keeping an eye on your new little rogue friend too.”

I step in front of my brother and slap my hand on his shoulder. “Don’t let him out of your sight, he might be trouble.” I warn and pull Greg closer, resting my forehead against hers. “And please, for the love of the Goddess, keep Dominic and Ash safe for me. Them and my brothers are all I have left, I can’t lose any of them.”

Greg gives a curt nod in response and wraps his arms around me for a quick but tight hug. “Stay safe, brother, I’ll protect your loved ones. Now go, we can’t waste any time.”

I trust him, trust that he can handle everything that’s coming his way, so without another word, I step outside, leaving them behind.

As soon as I disappear into the forest line, I stop and listen. The call echoes again, distant but clear enough for me to tell the direction it’s coming from, so I don’t hesitate as I strip and reach for my bear, nudging the beast to come out and play.

The moment I’m on all fours, the beast growls so loudly, I hear the rogue in the camp whimper and take off. Those are my brothers who are calling for me, and as their leader, I have a duty to be there. They need me and I’ll be damned if I ever let them down.
