Kaiden pov

“Must I entertain this nonsense for any longer? Gio, we have visited so many packs, schools, universities and orphanages that I have lost the count of places I’ve seen so far, lost the fucking count of ass-licking faces I’ve seen and hands I shook. Why the hell aren’t we returning back home already?” I groan, covering my eyes with my arm as I lean back in the car seat.

Gio chuckles and shakes his head, as always the fun loving lunatic, completely loving the extent of my misery. “Sorry, Kaiden, there’s no escaping this. Must I remind you who’s responsible for this mess?”

I roll my eyes at the remark, even if he doesn’t see the action and grunt. “No, you mustn’t.” While my tone is mocking, he doesn’t take offense, so I suppose that’s good.

“Don’t worry, we have just a few more stops and then, we can return home before your father sends the search teams to other continents. We need to ensure she’s not here, you know. And what easier way to find a runaway if not by using her mate for the task, huh?”

Now, he’s definitely having the time of his life. We both know that mutt isn’t my mate, I made it clear before plenty of high profile wolves when I rejected the worthless bitch.

“She’s no mate of mine,” is all I say and quickly shut up. Many more things I wish I could say, way worse things than just a few words, but I need to hold my ground and keep the thoughts to myself.

Gio, the same as my father, is against my decision to prefer a chosen queen over one given to me by that delusional deity of theirs. The Moon Goddess is as real as one allows her to be in their mind and since I doubt her existence is real, I refuse to live by her rules.

“Well, that’s a pity you would toss away a gift given by our mother, Kaiden,” Gio starts, clearly intent on giving me yet another lecture.

He’s my father’s right hand man, not mine, which means he will always stand with the decisions and thoughts of the old man, not me. I’m pretty sure he should get his ducks in a row and remember where his loyalty is supposed to be.

Once I become the king, he will bow at my feet, not my father’s.

As if the old fool can read my mind, Gio laughs. “Good one, I know what you are thinking about now, Kaiden. The only problem is that you’re no closer to becoming the next king. If you have forgotten this, let me remind you that you lost the title the moment you banished your fated queen. You’re young, you think the world is at your feet, but you couldn’t be more wrong about it. A king is nothing without his queen.”

Dropping my arms in my lap, I tilt my head and glare at Gio. “And what do you know about it, huh? Last time I checked, you’ve always been the silly little shit running after the king, not the king himself. You know nothing, Gio, so stop pestering me. Peasants like you shouldn’t have the rights to their own voice, let alone fucking opinions about the royal family.”

Once again, instead of getting annoyed or angry, Gio laughs. “It’s a pity you have the gall to speak such words about your own mother.”

My breath hitches as I barely hold myself back from pouncing at him, ripping out his throat with my bare hands and causing an insane traffic accident. How dare he speak of my mother, the queen, in such a manner? My mother is the most sophisticated and highest being I’ve ever known.

“You fucking mutt!” I snarl. “How dare you compare your queen to a lowly peasant such as yourself? Have you got a death wish?”

Gio raises a curious eyebrow and side glances at me. “Wait, don’t tell me you don’t know.” His voice is a mix of surprise and amusement. Soon, a slight smirk spreads across his lips, confusing me to no end.

“Know what? Fuck, what I don’t know this time? How many bloody secrets this family is keeping from me now, huh?”

I can feel the anger bubble within me as slowly, I grow frustrated beyond reason. All my life, I have met one dead end after another, all because I try to unravel the secrets my parents have kept from me. Turns out, all this time I could have asked my father’s right hand man for the answers.

Since Gio holds his tongue, I’m right about ready to pull it out, add some energy source to the muscle and make it speak for him.

“Come on,” I groan and slap a hand over my face. “We’re nearly reached the destination and I won’t rest until I get to know whatever this thing is so spill the beans. I’m serious.”

Gio looks a little uncomfortable, worried even, but eventually, he clears his throat and speaks. “I don’t think it’s my place to speak about this, Kaiden. It’s best if your parents tell you the truth, in this situation I’m nothing but a third party and I would rather remain that.”

“Gio, seriously, I’ll rip out your throat if you don’t come clean. You know me better than anyone, even better than my parents, and you know what I’m capable of, right? I don’t care what the punishment and consequences are for killing one of my father’s followers. Besides, I can always claim you offended me and I was blinded by my wolf’s rage. Happens pretty often with royals, no?” I make sure to keep looking at him as a grin spreads across my lips, nearly splitting my face in half.

Gio looks startled. Clearly, he’s worried about the possibilities. Truth be told, he has watched me kill many men just because I felt like it and even though he is close with my father - the king can’t do shit to me. I’m his heir, the future of what his bloodline has built from nothing and without me, his bloodline won’t continue. He needs me more than I need anything he could provide.

As the car comes to a stop, I look outside the window and frown at the rows of buildings. We have reached our target, but I still refuse to move and get out of the car.

“Kaiden, don’t be such a child, we can talk about this later,” Gio whispers when he notices a few men closing in on a car, all of them anxiously smiling, awaiting the visit of the future king.

“Nope,” is all I say, acting up on the toddler tantrum my father hates so much.

“Okay,” Gio finally gives in and reaches over to unbuckle my safety belt. “She’s a peasant, no royal blood, a simple woman coming from a servant family, who happened to be fated to the king by the Goddess herself. She is the woman who is responsible for his kingdom to have a strong and capable future king. A heir brought by a fated mate is much more valuable than one by the chosen one. That’s why he’s so set on you finding your true mate - rejection or not.”
