Werewolf
Sold by my Alpha, bought by my Mate Chapter 132: Return to the castle
Jeremiah
"Tell me we have everything under control."
"We are trying, Your Majesty," I replied.
I didn't like the fact that we had to improvise, that we were practically running from this pack, and that the enemy could be right on our heels.
The point was to get out of here and prepare for whatever came next. I checked to make sure everything was in order as the trucks carrying our warriors left, along with our equipment and best protection. We sent out guards, trackers, everything we could.
Everything had happened quickly, but that didn't mean we didn't have a clear plan. The idea was for the king and Luna Mildred to have all the protection possible.
The focus was on them, and if anything happened, we would eventually meet at the castle.
But of course I didn't want it to come to that. It had to be a quiet trip like the previous ones, although there was some chaos around now, or at least that's what the Alphas reported.
Asher was especially nervous and had his mate sitting on his lap as if he couldn't get away from her, hugging her like a bear, sweating and overwhelmed. She didn't look good either.
"You must promise me, my friend, that no matter what happens, you'll take care of her. She has to be protected," he said to me before getting into the car.
"Nothing is going to happen, Asher..."
"Just promise me, please," he said desperately, and I couldn't say no.
"The Luna is my priority. What are you afraid of? You know she'll be as protected as the king," I said.
"Randall... I feel he's close. He wants her...but he won't touch her..."
"Asher..."
"Please, humor me... no matter what happens. Tell me."
"No matter what happens, you have my word," I said, putting my hand on his shoulder, and he sighed. He didn't give me any more explanations, and I had a bad feeling the whole trip.
We were at the far end of the kingdom, and it would take time to get home. Every hour that passed was an hour in which something might happen.
The first night we camped near the forest. We were a large group and had to split up. When dawn came, I thanked the moon.
I didn't sleep and neither did the others, but at least I didn't need it. Everything was unusually quiet. Asher didn't even let his Luna move.
But on the second day the problems started.
"What's going on?" I asked the wolves who had come forward to bring us news from further down the trail.
"We are seeing strange hunting activity. We think there's a settlement much further ahead. I dare say it's the enemy's," one of the trackers reported.
"Damn..."
"We must continue," the king said.
"Your Majesty, I think we should consider the possibility of staying with one of the nearby packs. I'm sure the Alphas would welcome us with no problem... it would only be a small detour."
"Jeremiah... I think you know very well, every moment we spend out here is a chance for danger. We need to get to the Castle as soon as possible," he said, and he was right.
"There is no other way. If we pass early, we have a better chance," said one of the warriors.
And we approached the part I liked the least. We had to cross a valley, a rocky gorge, and the path was unforgiving and perfect for an ambush. If I was going to attack someone, it would be right here, I thought angrily.
And for a moment I thought we had made it, I really did. The problem came just as we were leaving. We had been confident, innocent, like children.
As the last car passed, we heard an explosion and the car at the back flew through the air.
"Forward with the king! Guards, with me!" I shouted, quickly getting out of the car and facing our attackers.
They were hybrids, and rogues as well. They were fierce and ruthless, as if this was the last battle of their lives. Higher up, I saw some wolves watching us, white ones, which gave me a bad feeling.
I went after the hybrids, attacking while making sure the cars weren't affected and could keep moving, but I realized that was impossible because more kept appearing and the target, no doubt, was the king.
They didn't want us to get out of here alive. They were shooting wolfsbane, and the bullets bounced off the wagons.
"Asher!" I shouted as I saw him leap into battle with the enemies in his wolf form, while Mildred cries.
I knew it must have cost him a lot, since his main goal was to protect the Luna, but we didn't have much of a choice here.
Cormac was violent and ruthless, taking down his enemies without a second thought. The king's warriors shot and killed some of the enemy, but more kept coming. This distraction had come to finish us off.
"Look out!" I heard shouts as I saw them approaching His Majesty's carriage.
Fortunately, they quickly got out and the car disappeared further ahead, running over the enemies. I expected them to reach the castle as soon as possible, or at least to get far away from here.
Many of our enemies went after the king, and the rest of us fought with what was left. The other target was undoubtedly our Luna; I wouldn't let them take her.
"Asher! Asher!" I heard her scream and saw one of our soldiers on the ground. I realized that they had gone straight for her. My friend was shot, but he kept moving like a mountain.
Cormac faltered and panicked. I ran to her and kill her captors while holding her in my arms.
When I saw that the enemy had Asher cornered, several wolves at a time, while our forces were dwindling, I was terrified that I would have to test the promise I had made to him.
"Mate! No!" Luna screamed as she saw them beating Asher and more piling on him. I held her as she cried and fought with all her strength, wanting to go to him.
"Jeremiah! Let's help him," she said, but I heard my friend's growl and a scream that could only mean one thing.
"Jeremiah! Please! We can't leave him!" she urged me to help.
More rogues were coming down, and the king's warriors were organizing as more were attacked. It was chaos and disaster.
Asher returned to his human form, and while he was held and the enemy came for us.
"Your promise!" he shouted at me. He was wounded, his blond hair stained red. I should never have accepted this, but he was right. They didn't want him... it was her; it was all about Mildred.
"Jeremiah, I beg you, let me go to him..." she pleaded, slapping my back, but there was no other way.
"I can't," I said.
"Run!"
For a second I hesitated, but I was a man of my word. When I saw the hybrids close to us, I had no choice. I ran with her.
"Mate! Mate! No! No!" she cried in pain, and the Alpha's roar echoed in desperation.
