Mildred
"I told you he was crazy!" shouted Randall angrily, as chaos still reigned in the castle.
No one seemed to understand what had happened.
"This was completely out of the ordinary. I've known Alpha Asher for years and I've never seen him like this," Jeremiah affirmed.
"Lies! I clearly saw him brutally kill my brother, tear him to pieces... He was a barbarian," Randall said, holding me as if he were still protecting me and acting as a human shield.
Everything he said seemed so far from what I had seen of Asher: a kind, friendly, dedicated man. Everyone respected him and he treated everyone well.
But I had seen another side, and it wasn't the first time. I understood that he had saved me at the bar, but he had also been completely bloodthirsty.
And now he was experiencing the same thing again. His cruelty and violence scared me, and now I didn't know who was the real one: the terrible Alpha or my mate.
"In a war, anything went. Especially when you had to protect innocents from a crazy Alpha driven by power, the very alpha your brother supported," the vampire shouted, and Randall didn't answer, but he didn't have to.
The garden was in chaos, blood everywhere and much of it destroyed. From there, I could hear Duncan's screams. The poor man had tried to control Asher and protect us, and now he was injured.
Jeremiah took off his torn jacket and prepared to talk to the king, while I stayed alone with Randall.
"Thank Goddess I was close... I had a feeling something bad was going to happen... I couldn't bear for anything to happen to you, my mate," he said and I sighed. Randall hugged me and kissed my head.
"What would happen now?" I asked.
""The king's justice will fall upon him with full force. Not only did he destroy part of the castle's perimeter, but he also attacked his own friends for no reason...that's very dangerous," he said, and I turned to look at him.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, there were stories of Alphas going crazy, their wolves losing their minds over time. Usually from being alone. Wolves needed their mates, little dove, true mates or not, and Asher had spent too much time alone. It was obvious he needed you, and at the same time, we had to think about your safety. You couldn't be alone with a man like that. I strongly disagreed," he said, and I trembled.
He had been the dangerous one, and now it was Asher. I didn't know if I was afraid of Asher or of not seeing him again; the thought was destroying me.
"Don't worry, my mate. I'll be here to protect you and take care of you," he said and gave me a hug.
The thought of escaping from here haunted me.
That afternoon, I went looking for Ava for some advice. I thought I saw her in a corner, but when I got there, I didn't find her. However, I overheard a conversation between Jeremiah and Constantine.
"Tell me the truth, friend. What happened?" the advisor asked.
"I don't deny the possibility that the wolf went mad... but there are things that seem very strange to me,," Jeremiah said.
"Like what?"
"Well, even though he was desperate and attacking everyone... he never tried to hurt Miss Mildred," said Jeremiah.
"She's his mate, it would be logical...maybe he was jealous that Randall showed up," Constantine replied.
"It seemed to me that he sensed that she was in danger, and everyone seemed like enemies to him," the thoughtful vampire mused.
"Yeah, it was really peculiar..."
"He didn't attack Ava either, not only did he not hurt her, not even a scratch..." the vampire added.
"We definitely need to do some research. In the meantime, at least he's back to his human form, he'll be kept under observation while the king makes a decision..." Constantine said.
I walked into what appeared to be the infirmary and saw Duncan struggling to adjust his sheets, his arm bandaged and unable to move.
"Let me..." I said, helping him, and he looked at me with a smile.
"Thank you so much Luna... I'm so glad you're okay," he said without losing his good mood.
"I hope you get better soon," I said.
"This? It's nothing! I've had worse injuries, but without a mate my recovery is slower," he said, then took my hand.
"I hope you don't get a bad impression of my Alpha... I don't know what happened today, but that's not the man I know... my best friend. Asher is a generous man who would give his life for the people he loves, and no doubt, for you. He's an Alpha who cares about everyone in his pack, who treats everyone with respect, and most of all... has dreamed of finding you for years," he said, and his words moved me.
"I'm just confused," I admitted, and he nodded.
"Just give him time, and we'll find out what happened," he said, and I stayed with him until he fell asleep.
Just as I was about to leave, the delicious scent of the spring forest hit me, and I couldn't help but let my feet go towards him.
He was a few rooms away, and when I saw him, he was practically tied up. He seemed to be asleep, but as soon as he sensed my presence, he woke up.
"Millie..." he said in a pained voice, and the logical thing for me to do would have been to run away, to leave after everything I'd seen, but... I couldn't, even though I was scared.
"I just wanted to see if you were okay," I said, coming closer.
"I am... I was worried about you," he replied, and I saw that he was bound with strips of wolfsbane, and just the sight of it hurt me.
"I don't know what happened, Millie... you have to believe me. Cormac... he's had his moments, but he would never hurt you. Believe me, I hate myself right now for everything that happened," he said desperately.
"It was all so unpredictable..."
"I know..." and I thought that maybe the King would separate me from you," and the thought broke my heart. Suddenly, with great effort, I began to untie the ropes that held him to the bed, and he looked at me in amazement.
"What are you doing?" he asked in a whisper, and my hands trembled, but I knew exactly what I was feeling now.
"I can't see you like this..." I confessed, and he seemed surprised. But when I finished untying them, I took his hand and we both sighed with relief.
"My mate... My precious mate..." he said, hugging me very gently as I caressed his arm, as if I could heal his wounds this way.
In a few minutes, I fell asleep, dreaming of demons, of ghostly figures coming closer to me, and one of them told me clearly.
"We are coming for you. Dreamer." and I felt a hand taking me.
