"I don't want you to go..." he whispered in my ear.
"I don't want to go either..." I said, still on his body. Asher's scent was like an addiction, and I wanted to lose myself in his skin forever. I straddled him, and he smiled in the most beautiful way.
"I don't know if it's wise for you to sit like that... my precious mate," he said in a husky voice, and I felt his body slowly responding to me.
"It's been a while since I stopped thinking wisely..." I answered, touching his chest, and a delicious growl escaped him.
"Soon you will visit my pack... and I'm sure you will love it..." he said, and the idea thrilled me.
As I got out of bed, he watched my every step with delight, and when I went to the bathroom, I sighed. I felt like my choice was getting easier and easier.
I would love to have a wolf to guide me, to know if River Ash was really the place for me. If I could be happy there.
But if the people in this pack were like Asher and like Duncan... I was sure of it.
"Jeremiah... have you seen Ava?" I asked the vampire who greeted me warmly in the morning.
"Not for a few hours, her room is locked... I guess she's busy," he said.
"Ohh..."
"Is there anything I can help you with, miss?" he asked.
"Actually there is, but keep it a secret..." I said.
"Then so be it, you can count on the fact that even the strongest spell will not get the information out of me that you are going to tell me...", he said kindly as always, and we went into a secluded room. There I asked him nervously.
"What if I want to choose now?"
"Choose your mate?" he asked me with a smile, it was obvious he knew what my choice would be.
"That's right..."
"Well, I congratulate you, choosing a mate is an important matter. However... I must tell you that you will have to wait until the approaching eclipse anyway..."
"And I just have to say who I want? Just like that?" I asked, the idea seemed the craziest to me.
"It is not that simple, miss... not having a wolf... for you... has more to do with something about you feeling, from the bottom of your heart, who your mate is going to be. Your heart has to decide, it's not something that comes from logic or from thinking or from evaluation. Not in your case that you have two mates destined for you. There are wolves who say that to reject a destined mate is an insult to the goddess and has... consequences."
"It all sounds very complicated..." I said, lost.
"Ohh, but it's not. I'll admit that this situation is quite strange, from what I know of werewolf mating culture. But when you feel it, you will know... and the bond will kick in immediately. I've already discussed this with the king," he said.
"It seems to have logic... the bond is the one that will decide in the end."
"The bond will confirm what your heart feels..." he said as suddenly there was a commotion in the castle and we approached the entrance and saw Randall being carried on a stretcher.
"Goddess! What happened?" I asked.
"He was in pretty bad shape, looks like he was beaten," one of the warriors said. The king soon came over to assess the situation.
"So, what did you find?" he asked the doctor.
"He seems to be in a pretty strange situation, he must have been confronted by another wolf," she said, when suddenly Randall began to speak.
"Mate... mate," he said, holding out his hand.
"I think it would be good for him to have his mate around," the doctor said, looking at me, and the king motioned for me to take his hand.
"Here I am," I told him, and he seemed to sigh.
"Attack... watch out," he said suddenly, and we all looked at each other. Asher was in the corner, watching suspiciously. Neither Ava nor Duncan were in sight.
"It seems that Alpha Randall needs to rest... maybe we should keep an eye out and guard the entrances," the king said.
"Understood, Your Majesty," Constantine said and began to take action.
"Miss, I understand it's your day with him, so... preferably you should stay by his side," the king said, giving Asher a look.
I heard them whispering something in the distance about how it's best to keep an eye on him, that they needed to question him when he wakes up. Meanwhile, I just sat there like a fool, holding his hand.
What could have happened? Did he really face other wolves?
"You're safe Millie... nothing's going to happen to you... mate," I heard Asher say as if he could read my mind.
"I'm going to check the perimeter," Jeremiah said and left quite determined.
That day, Randall didn't speak or react again. I had to stay with him the next day; it seemed like my life had been put on hold, and I really just wanted to be with Asher.
"Have my buddy..." Asher said and brought me my paints.
"Asher... thank you," I said happily, looking at my things.
He seemed to think of everything... especially me. I had to fight the urge to kiss him like crazy and tell him that... it's him. That the bond was getting stronger and stronger.
I spent those days and nights painting. Sometimes I realized I had fallen asleep, Randall still unconscious, and I had painted so many things: those strange creatures, beautiful mountains with a wolf-shaped rock, clear eyes, a luscious mouth that I knew exactly who it belonged to.
I saw notebooks and pages filled with portraits of Asher, it seemed to be my way of keeping him close, if only in some way.
Then my paintings started to turn red, blood and pain appeared, fangs and eyes full of fire, a mark of a bite... and I didn't know to whom they referred. I wished I had Jeremiah around to ask him what it was.
Maybe it was about something bad that was going to happen?
"We don't know exactly what happened or even why he's not responding. It's like he's sleeping... but I don't know if it's a spell or what. It's not common for wolves not to wake up at this point," I listened to the doctor talking to Constantine in the hallway.
What kind of attack did he have, is that what I'm painting?
I looked at Randall's features, as if I had known them all my life, and wondered what would have happened if he had accepted me, or if he hadn't hurt me so long ago.
"You can't change the past," I whispered.
I stayed alone with Randall for a few more days, only Asher watching me from a distance, knowing I'm stuck here.
One night, I woke up out of nowhere, and I made a decision. I walked down the hall in my robe, barefoot, I had to see him.
But that night, especially that night... uncontrollable events were going to unfold. I had no idea that everything would change.
