Jeremiah

"It's about to start..." I said, without looking at the sky.

The world was different when these phenomena happened. We beings of the night, those of the supernatural world, felt it on our skin.

"His Majesty has moved to a safe house not far from here," Nathaniel told me. He had become an extremely trustworthy Alpha and helped me without questions or hesitation.

"The other Alphas?"

"Alpha Shum is in the forest, men and women guard the area to the south. Alpha Dimitri has stayed behind as His Majesty's personal guard," he says. "It's extremely quiet."

"Yes, the calm before the storm," I said, "and your mate?"

"In the closest pack," he says with a sigh.

It had been an enormous risk to bring them here, but they couldn't survive without their mates. Luna Penelope could not be put in danger.

"She will be back with you soon, Alpha," I add.

I walked through all the corridors of the castle, giving orders and telling everyone to be vigilant. I kept wondering where the attack would come from, what would they do to get into the castle? Would it be an attack like the other night? And I find Asher looking out the window, distressed.

"Not even the leaves on the trees are moving," he said.

"It will all be over quickly. You'll see, and she'll be safe," I told him.

"She needs to be with me to be protected. My wolf is desperate, he thinks we might lose her tonight,"

"And I'm sure she would be better off by your side, but that's what our enemies would think, that you would be the ultimate protector of her. They probably imagine you, in your wolf form, lying on her bedroom door. And that's exactly what we don't want them to think” I explain.

He knows what we have to do, but wolves are wolves and a wolf only thinks of his mate.

"What was that?" I say as I hear some shouting and run straight to one of the gardens.

"What's going on?" asks Asher, running up beside me.

"I heard screaming," and then there's a grunt. Suddenly we see soldiers running in that direction.

"What happened?" I demand.

"Sir, a few moments ago we saw Alpha Randall, and suddenly he disappeared... " says one of them.

"What do you mean, he disappeared? This is the work of demons!" I yell and hurry with all my strength and speed, and when I reach the garden I see something terrible: a she-wolf completely covered in blood and with several bites.

"Wolves and vampires," Asher says.

"She worked here, she has the uniform of the king's service," one of them says, examining her, but no one knows who she is.

"Follow the tracks," I tell the warriors, and suddenly we are ambushed by a stampede: huge warriors with strength beyond the supernatural appear out of nowhere.

His Majesty's warriors fly through the air while I steady my feet on the ground. A few of them eagerly focuses on Asher, and when I kill the first one by breaking his neck, I realize that he is an extremely strong wolves, but with unbalanced movements, as if they don't really know what to do.

And my surprise is even greater when I see the same man stand up trembling, his neck put back together, and the teeth he shows me are not wolves'.

"Hybrids…"

Our enemies really had done the unthinkable. I know they were experimenting, but never that they had successfully created so many hybrids.

And there might be more.

I watched as several hybrids fell while my Alpha friend fought with everything he had. Suddenly, Nathaniel appeared and looked at the whole scene in horror.

"Alpha, call for reinforcements and have them protect the entire perimeter of the castle and everyone inside!" I shouted.

We would try to control them, it was certainly better if they stayed here and did not succeed in entering the castle. We had not seen any hybrids during the last attack, and now I was thinking of ways to finish them off.

The king had already killed one hybrid, the Alpha that had rebelled in the last war not so long ago, but it had been weakened little by little and finally torn to pieces by the rogues. And I had no time for that here.

"What in the name of all that is holy!" appeared Duncan, trying to get the hybrids off his Alpha's back. Asher was in his wolf form, fighting mercilessly with dozens of hybrids.

"These are hybrids, gentlemen, and they have survived the transformation. They are really strong and dangerous!" I shouted to keep everyone on their toes. I could hear some of the soldiers being bitten and screaming.

I don't know how long we had been here, but we hadn't managed to kill a single one, so they were confident that we could keep them at bay.

Meanwhile, the wolves would tire sooner or later, they wouldn't be able to last forever, instead the hybrids would rise up again and again.

"Damn creatures! They don't die easily, they come back to life as zombies, they're worse than cockroaches," Duncan said. Until it came to me... the solution.

"Fire," I muttered.

The Beta had made the same comment when they invaded the castle, and I remembered that he had a blowtorch that burned our enemies.

"You're a genius, Duncan!" I said to him and walked away, making my way through the battle.

"What did I say?" he asks as he hit the hybrids.

"Fire! Bring fire!" I started yelling like crazy and soldiers with torches appeared.

"On them!" I shouted, and as we attacked, other warriors held back the fire so it wouldn't spread to the garden, and when I thought we had almost defeated them, someone appeared with a big smile.

"Jeremiah..."

A vampire. I had known him for so many years that I thought he was dead. But here he was standing in front of me.

"Balthazar..."

"We meet again, friend..."

"I am not your friend," I roar.

He had been part of the last uprising... I should have known he was involved, I suspected it, but I did nothing. He and those like him who thought there should be another world order were one of the reasons Maximus was crowned king, and why I thought he was the best choice to keep the balance.

"Well, I'm very happy to see you too... though as always on the wrong side of history," he tells me as the others fight with what's left of the hybrids.

"Wrong is creating hybrids, playing with nature..."

"I don't call it playing, I call it taking advantage of power as I see fit. And man, I have a lot more power now, Jeremiah..." he tells me, and Ava appears next to him.

"No…" I say dejected. But she doesn't look quite right and shows no sign of wanting to talk to me.

"Ava?", Duncan says in a small voice, and it's only now that she has a small reaction, she blinks a few times and her hands shake.

"The demoness is on our side now, what do you think about that? And we have come to take what belongs to our side... the Luna of the prophecy will be ours."
