Jeremiah

"Balthazar…"

“We meet again, friend”

He stands in front of me, and I can see him clearly, as if the fog had not affected him.

"We were never friends," I say firmly.

"But we were a long time ago, when it was a different time and the vampires were united, not with our enemies," he replies, and I snort.

"At least the wolves are living creatures, not like you, who ally with demons fresh from hell and also experiment with using our blood to create others," I say annoyed. But Balthazar doesn't seem to care what I say.

"Sometimes the ends justify the means, Jeremiah. I know you believed it once and then forgot, but vampires are a superior species and the only way to help the others is to make them a little more like us," he says as I growl.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Oh, but I know very well. You are stuck here among wolves and vampires and some hybrids, and you have no idea what else is out there, how your friends are fighting for their lives, for everything we have created. I told you the king deserved nothing from us! I told you the king couldn't help us, couldn't control us! You believed his empty promises and his weakness. And here are the consequences.

"I won't let any of this, neither you nor anyone else, reach the gates of this castle," I say firmly.

"I don't think you understand, vampire. The first consequence that will happen here is your death. Anyway, I'm sure you're one of those vampires who's tired of living, so let us do you a favor. Exterminate them!" he suddenly shouts, and the wolves and vampires come at us, howling and desperate as if they were mad.

"Hold on, don't give up!" I yell, and the fight intensifies. Balthazar comes at me with all his might.

I try to grab him by the neck and we move so fast that I don't think anyone can see us. I hear the warriors screaming all around me when suddenly I feel something hit me, like a rope wrapped around my body.

Looking down at my chest, I realize it's a silver whip. Where the metal touches my skin, I feel like I'm burning and I struggle desperately. Balthazar uses it with a thick glove and a triumphant smile.

"I told you this would be the end of you. I was even willing to give you a chance, but I think we both know that wouldn't have made sense. You've always been stubborn, my friend, it would have been a lost cause."

"If you think you're going to win this so easily, you are sorely mistaken. The king is backed by thousands of wolves who are willing to give their lives to avoid falling into the hands of the demons," I say and he comes closer, tightening the whip, and I feel my skin burning.

"Only with the Whisperers can we be truly free, take the humans we want, drink their blood whenever we want, not be oppressed and not be in areas controlled by wolves or not. It's our only chance," he tells me, still trying to convince me.

"That's what they want you to believe. They will dominate everything and leave you behind. From the beginning," I tell him, and he laughs.

"That's what you think. Because that's how your king behaved," he says, making a move that I don't see coming.

He takes out a wooden stake and stabs me in the chest, very close to my heart, and I scream in pain. In so many years of living in this world, I've never been attacked in this way, I felt powerless, as if I had no control over my fate and that the end could be near.

"Where are your friends? Tell me. As far as I can see, they are all inside the castle, taking care of themselves and protecting themselves from this attack, with a few foolish Alphas fighting bravely. And yet you, the only idiot who came into this thick fog on your own. Can't you see that you've been used? And you call me a fool," he yells at me.

He´s about to move the stake a few more inches into my chest to finish me off, when suddenly we hear screams and a fiery arrow falls into Balthazar's chest, knocking him to the ground.

I turn to see, and it's a terrible advance, led by an Alpha with a bright aura that disperses the fog in a way I never thought possible.

"Nathaniel..." I sigh, unable to believe it, and remove the whip while watching Balthazar on the ground, trying to remove the arrow.

Alpha Nathaniel quickly attacks with his Beta Roger, taking down wolves and vampires, while more archers continue to shoot arrows at the vampires, finishing them off.

I stand in front of Balthazar and don't let him move, pulling the stake out of my chest with all my strength and holding it in my hands while the vampire lies on the ground, part of his body in flames.

"It was my mistake not to have finished you a long time ago, but I won't make the same mistake twice," I say, and immediately I drive the wooden stake into his chest, and I hear him scream in pain. The screams are deafening, when suddenly someone appears by my side.

"Constantine? And the king?" I ask, but the man doesn't respond to me about any of that.

"To end the mist, the demon must be killed," the man tells me and gives me a small stone mounted on an arrow.

"Nathaniel, over there! Extend your aura!" I shout to the Alpha, and he does it. It seems that beyond there is a demon moving his hands, stretching the mist even further.

"You, here," I tell one of the warriors of His Majesty who has a bow and arrow, and I give him the arrow.

"Aim directly at that demon, at our signal. Don't fail for anything in the world," I say.

I approach the demon, running towards him, and he dodges me, hitting me and throwing me to the ground.

"Are you really so desperate to die, vampire?" he says to me, whispering and with a disturbing voice.

"I won't be the one to die today, demon," I tell him, and I see his face contort even more when the arrow impacts his back.

An oppressive scream runs through the entire place, and immediately the mist disappears. The demon falls with a dull sound. I hear more screams from the other demons and see the surprise of enemy vampires and wolves.

"One less, now let's go for the others," I say.
