Werewolf
Sold by my Alpha, bought by my Mate Chapter 42: To obey or disobey
Jeremiah
"I swear, it felt like we were stuck in a horror movie for years...I don't think even a horror movie would have as much action as what we experienced," Duncan said, holding his head.
"Attacks by rogues running wild, Randall with a strange power, the Beta not seeming to know what was going on, the rest of the pack hiding, the Alpha and his family trying to trick us, she-wolves sneaking into Randall's room, and another in Asher's room seducing him...it was really chaos," he continued.
"It was like that. And worse than you can imagine, dude... I thought it would be bad, but it was worse. Not to mention that my mate was living in horrible conditions, and in the end the Alpha's mother showed up and threatened her," Asher said angrily.
I knew he had lost control several times on this trip, but after all he had been through, I couldn't even judge him.
"All in all, it sounds like she had a very entertaining visit and not a boring one at all," Ava said smiling.
I saw a strange interaction between her and Duncan...they seemed to want to jump on each other. Hopefully the Beta would satisfy her passions.
"What are we going to do? I mean, besides, you guys checked out some weird stuff not too far from here," Asher said.
"Excellent question. I have a theory that besides rogues and vampires, there are demons involved," I said.
"Other kinds of demons... let's not assume they're all the same," Duncan jumped in, looking at Ava as if she were the goddess herself.
"Of course we're not all the same..." she said, looking back at him.
"It's true... some are incredibly sexy and some are not..." he added as we all watched the scene like it was a ping pong match.
"Wolfie... and how do you know they're not all sexy?" she asked, amused.
"It's impossible for everyone to be as sexy as you..." he said.
There was a kind of electric current between them that was hard to understand. They were from two different species and I had never heard of such an interaction.
"Now, back to the subject at hand..." I said, and the Beta pulled himself together, Ava looked pleased with all the attention she was attracting.
"I say we need to confront Randall directly. Can't we put him under some kind of spell or treatment, Ava?" asked Asher, and she lost her smile.
"That's not so easy, big guy. Besides... Wouldn't that expose our intentions?" she replied, and the Alpha growled.
Manipulation tactics were certainly not mine, nor were the wolves'. They preferred force, and I preferred to simply enchant or inform myself.
But I had gone through the king's entire library and found nothing that would help me. I could handle rogues and vampires... but those strange creatures.
And what bothered me the most was that it was all happening right under my nose, and I couldn't do anything about it.
"We should have taken some of the zombie rogues as witnesses... it wasn't like we could have done it that easily but...," Duncan commented.
"We didn't leave witnesses either. It was the duty of the royal guard to keep word from spreading that the king was there, outside the castle," I said regretfully.
"All we can do is watch and wait...," Ava was saying and I could see the wolves were getting restless, they were not like us, their lives were shorter and therefore more impatient.
"I need us to figure this out now... I fear my mate is in danger, every moment with him is a chance for me to hurt him," Asher demanded. I approached him very convincingly.
"Friend... I promise you we will find a solution, we all love miss Mildred, we don't want her to suffer anymore. But if what you guys experienced in Red Moon happens again, or maybe it's even worse... we have to be prepared, we have to know what's going on," I told him and he nodded, annoyed.
At least she was going to be with him for the next few days, it was hard to keep track of Randall, it seemed he was into so many things, he was always talking to someone, in meetings, when he wasn't trying to find out what Mildred was doing.
But I knew Ava wouldn't leave him alone, and yet I, too, felt she was hiding something.
"I never got the sense that he was as powerful an Alpha as they described...," the king told me.
"I doubt he is. It has to have been a momentary thing, if I had been there I could attend to more information," I replied.
"Do you think it has something to do with the prophecy?" he asked me.
"It may be, after all Miss Mildred was with him for quite a while. Also, from what I understood, Asher also took advantage of being with her. But even with that... it seems to me that there is something else. Asher and Duncan commented that it may be that Randall is involved with other women."
"Other women?" he asks me in amazement.
"Yes, the bond with Miss Mildred doesn't seem to be that strong. Of course, he wants her to take her away from Asher, and he knows that losing her would also make him look bad and weak," I reply.
"It amazes me that this Alpha is so confident. I think you're right, he must have support somewhere. We must fortify the castle and prepare everything. I want an emergency protocol created against external attacks. I also want us to prepare weapons against vampires and wolves, and I will also speak so that all warriors and Alphas of the other territories are alert," he says.
"It will be done, Your Majesty. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you if you have received any information from the warriors sent to investigate the vampire problem," I ask, and he gives me a dirty look.
Bad omen.
Actually... they didn't even show up," he said and I got a bad feeling.
The King's Warriors weren't just wolves, they were fully trained. They always gave reports.
"Your Majesty, there is no better defense than an attack. Give me a small group and I'll go, we need..." I said, but he interrupted me forcefully and stubbornly.
"I need you here, Jeremiah. You need to be here to do my command. I can't look like a king being told what to do," he huffed and I had nothing else to do.
"I understood, Your Majesty..."
If he wanted me to stay there, it was because something was happening to him and he didn't want to tell me.
I had to choose between obeying his orders or disobeying them, between letting the darkness consume us at any moment or saving my friends.
And it seemed to me that the answer was simple enough.
