The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1440

Mr. Hyde was engaged in combat with a monstrous beast that had crawled out of river depths. The beast was already well into its rampage, egged on either by Hao Xuan's continuous presence within the waters or the copious amount of blood he had leaked into it.

It was unlike any creature he had seen before. The body was long and obviously serpentine but without any scales. Its white flesh twitched and squirmed every time it moved its head, which was something straight out of a nightmare.

The mouth 'flaps' opened in five different directions each with its own tentacle at the end, giving it the appearance of a starfish but instead of harmless tube legs, there were rows of serrated teeth present.

There were black spotted organs all around the head that made it difficult to guess which way it was facing. The only clues came from the patches of hair-like structures that lined the remainder of its body and the half-a-dozen or so scythe-like forelimbs situated 8 meters below the head. It was tricky to gauge just how big this beast was since most of its body was still underneath the river but all in all, it had easily exceeded 30 meters just by surrounding them from all sides.

Hyde was inscribing magic circles with one hand and using the other to strike at its body to buy time, all the while holding Hao Xuan up through the spiritual threads.

The magic circles fired off a barrage of green orbs at the beast making it scream in agony. After dodging a flurry of attacks from the scythes he looked down at Hao Xuan, "DID YOU FIND IT?"

Hao Xuan nodded while wiping the blood out of his eyes, "THIS IS A GOOD ONE! THE TIME IS PERFECT AND THE PLACE IS CLOSE BY!"

"GO THEN! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!" Mr. Hyde roared back.

"YOU, OBVIOUSLY!" Hao Xuan shouted back even louder, "I'M NOT LEAVING YOU IN HERE, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?! COME QUICKLY!"

"Do.you.think.we.have.TIME FOR THAT?! IF I DON'T KEEP THIS THING BUSY YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GO THROUGH! STOP DAWDLING AND JUST LEAVE! I'll come later..." he muttered the last line to himself.

"SHUT THE HELL UP! I'M NOT LEAVING MY KID BEHIND, GET IN THIS DAMN WATER BEFORE I FREEZE TO DEATH!"

Hyde was so shocked by Hao Xuan's words that for a moment he forgot to defend himself and the creature made full use of that opportunity to cut his ethereal form cleanly in half.

"AHHH! LOOK WHAT YOU DID!" he screamed while reconnecting his form but now he was a little dimmer, a little more see-through.

He couldn't even speak out loud anymore so as not to get distracted and used the spiritual threads to directly communicate his thoughts since they were already connected to Hao Xuan.

'Stop wasting time, old man. Didn't you say you will bring forth a new future? Then why would I still go out when you will have a different version of me to screw up sooner or later? We both knew this was a one-way trip for me, just go while I can still hold this thing back. I can feel it getting stronger with every passing moment...'

Having it all laid out in front of him even Hao Xuan couldn't deny that. And in this urgent moment he realized just why he wanted it that way.

"You're right, and it's just for a selfish reason anyway. But is it really so bad to want at least one person to remember who I was before all this? Before I become a tool for the Nine, or the Emperor for some faraway people? No one other than you will remember who Hao Xuan was, or what I had to do to get there."

'Hahaha, I didn't think my father was capable of such complex emotions, what a discovery! But do you remember what 'you' used to tell us all the time whenever we complained like that?'

Hao Xuan didn't have to think for too long since the memories were right there. And when he uttered them out loud all of a sudden it made sense, "Heavy lies the crown."

'Exactly. For you, for us, not even in death does our duty end. We must do what others cannot, or will not. We suffer so they don't have to. What difference does it make if they don't remember us? Does it make the wounds any less painful? Of course not!'

"....."

'So leave all those useless thoughts behind, there will be plenty more to worry about in the future. And who says this is the end? I might win against this beast, do you really have so little trust in your own child?'
