The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1579

Ever the dutiful soldier, Waclaw played the role of protecting his sworn mistress from the shadows quite well. He hadn't done this in over 15 years but it was already ingrained into his bones by his late father.

He was one of the personal guards of the Old master, Lady Yuki's father, so it was quite common for him to tail the little princess whenever she went out on one of her adventures. And sometimes he would take Waclaw along to teach him the ways.

It might sound like a lot of unrewarding work but he was always happy to do it because that was one of the rare few instances he could spend with his otherwise busy father.

Waclaw couldn't help but smile upon seeing the little princess all grown up.

'You'd be proud of her pa, she is just as kind as the old master.'

But the smile quickly faded when he remembered the last few days, mainly the massacre at the Estate that took the lives of thousands.

His mood turned sour, forcing Waclaw to refocus on the task at hand.

Lady Yuki hadn't the slightest clue of his presence even when she reached the intended location. It was a small eatery fairly out of the way on the eastern edge of the city.

She stood on the street, wistfully watching the broken-down old signboard that read 'Vei's Noodle shop'.

Lady Yuki was lost in her memories, watching her younger self play on the street while her mother kept a watchful eye from inside while chatting with the store owner.

After nearly a minute the wooden door slid open and a woman in her late fifties stumbled out with a steel bucket. She was missing her right leg but still exuded an aura of

"We're closed," she said while emptying the half-filled bucket on the side, "Come back in the morning, we'll have some leftovers you can have."

She didn't look at her but Lady Yuki smiled so brightly that it could light up the night sky.

"Aunty Vei!" she softly called out.

The old woman shuddered and the bucket fell from her hand. She looked over her shoulder to finally meet Lady Yuki's gaze. For a brief moment the image of an older woman that looked remarkably similar to Lady Yuki overlapped over hers but...that could not be the case.

"Yui!" she muttered under her breath, unable to believe her eyes.

Lady Yuki walked up and hugged her tightly.

Aunty Vei could hardly hold back her tears as she reciprocated in kind.

"Look at you, little Yui. You resemble her so closely that I thought your mother had come to take me away."

Lady Yuki chuckled through the tears, "No I don't, ama was much prettier!"

Aunty Vei patted her on the back while failing miserably to control her emotions. For the next minute or so they cried and laughed wordlessly in each other's arms until some other voices came from inside the store.

"Oh, what is this? Did the old bat get a lover at her age?"

"Hahaha, Veivei is that true? Show us who you are hiding!"

"Yeah yeah! I wanna see the man brave enough to make little Vei cry!"

The first speaker was an ape demihuman in his late forties or early fifties from the looks of it.

The second was a demihuman around the same age as Aunt Vei. She had a second pair of fox ears and the stripes and tail of a tiger.

The third one was a demihuman girl with thin crystal-like butterfly wings on her back and two small antennae at the top of her forehead. She was much younger than the other two, probably in her early twenties if one had to guess.

Aunt Vei ended the hug with a fair few reservations.

"These old fools can't keep to themselves for even a moment. Always pestering! Why would I get a man at this age?!" she snarled at them before stepping to the side to reveal Lady Yuki, "I'm just happy to see my niece is all."

All three of the demihumans were stupefied first by the revelation and then by her appearance.

"I-Is that-" the ape demihuman could hardly get a word out he was so dumbfounded.

"No, it can't be!" the fox-eared demihuman muttered in shock, "We saw her d-"

"Hush!" the youngest of them slapped the other two on the back with her wings as she was the most composed of the trio.

"It's little Yu- no, Lady Yuki," she said smilingly.

Lady Yuki wiped the tears from her eyes and promptly fixed her dress before giving a light bow.

"Oh, I didn't know aunty Vei had company. How do you do?"

The fox-eared demihuman rubbed her eyes, "The likeness is...wow..."

"Hahaha! Let's get away from prying eyes first."

Aunt Vei pulled Lady Yuki inside before closing the door behind her, but not before throwing a quick glance at the rooftop where Waclaw was hiding.
