The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1479
*Achoo*
Hao Xuan sneezed loudly, the sound echoing throughout the abandoned Beast Market and giving away his position.
*sniff*
"Heuheuheu," a comical laugh came out in response from one of the empty buildings, followed by a strange sound that sounded like an artificial voice, "Someone must be thinking about youuu~"
From the sound of it, it belonged to a man but there was no emotion behind it.
Hao Xuan pinched his itching nose and unsheathed the blade. He had already lost track of the creature but it chose to reveal itself to him of its own volition, which did not bode well for him.
Either it was confident enough in its abilities to hide, or arrogant enough to believe that he wouldn't be a troublesome opponent if it came down to mortal combat. But in any case, he wasn't taking any chances.
"Why don't you come out and fight me like a man?" he baited with an easy insult.
"Huehuehue! But I am no man, why would I fight like one??"
"But you talk like one."
"I have...learned this, from watching you. Do you not like it? The other one liked it..." it actually sounded a little confused at the end, which made Hao Xuan's brow rise.
"From watching me? You must be a quick learner if you learned how to talk in the few minutes you have been tailing me."
"Minutes?! YEARS! You don't remember? Hmm...you said you wouldn't remember..."
Hao Xuan was trying his best to lock down its location using his supernatural senses but it was to no avail. Not only was the direction of the voice constantly changing, but it also did not have any telltale signs that usually accompanied it.
The creature wasn't even breathing.
He tried to keep it talking while moving deeper into the market, getting ever so closer to the front deck.
The city usually never stopped moving no matter what time it was. The front deck acted both as a barrier and a windbreaker for when the shields could not hold the tide of searing hot and cold winds back.
During the day, sand and sizzling hot air ran through the beast market without pause since it was right next to the front deck, and, for some reason, its own shields were not working anymore.
At night it was much quieter and a lot colder.
But that didn't mean one could casually step out onto the front deck as they pleased. The city was moving at several times the speed of sound and even the bit of air that escaped through the main shields would be enough to debone a creature below the profound realm.
He wanted to push the creature closer to the front deck hoping that at the very least, the stupendous amount of Ying energy coming through would disrupt its abilities if not stop them altogether.
"Hmm, is that right? We have met before huh? Why are you hiding then?"
"Because you said you would kill me if I showed myself, so I never did. You never found me before but now...this is, as you humans say, most interesting..."
Hao Xuan's eyes narrowed. Initially, he thought it was making stuff up just to mess with him but the more he talked to it the more it made sense.
"I told you that if you showed yourself I would kill you? When did I say that?"
"In the forest earlier when you first fell through. When you were small and weak, but vicious and cruel....oh so cruel you were."
"Is that where you are from? The forest?"
He had already flashes of a memory like that, where he was a kid walking through the forest and an old man found him.
"Nooo, not from the forest!" it yelled anxiously, "The river! We came from the river, you brought me with you when you fell! And now I can never return or they will kill me."
'!!!'
'The river of time?!'
"Who will kill you? If you tell me what I need to know I will protect you.'
'This creature must have been a denizen of the river, the ones Lord Yami was talking about. Maybe it fell through alongside me and has been stuck here ever since.'
The creature went quiet. Hao Xuan thought it was contemplating accepting his proposal but then out of nowhere, he saw something move from the corner of his eye.
He jumped aside, dodging a lazy strike that seemed more like a joke than an actual attack with malice behind it.
"HOW DARE YOU!" it screamed in a horse voice, "YOU DID THIS TO ME! YOUR BROUGHT ME DOWN HERE! I am lost in this FILTH, tied to a human that cannot even remember its own life!"
It swiped left and right repeatedly in anger but Hao Xuan dodged it with ease. It was obvious this creature had never needed to fight.
He used the sheath to smack the creature in the chest, sending it rolling back.
"Calm down..whatever you are. The one you met before was not me, if you listen to me then not only will I not harm you but there might even be a way to return you to the river."
