The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1480

The creature suddenly froze, its silhouette turning in Hao Xuan's direction.

"You can...do that?? NO! LIES! You are lying just like him!"

Or so it said but it did not attack him again.

Hao Xuan smiled inwardly seeing the hesitation since that probably meant that it believed him to some extent.

"No, I am not him, I've already said that," he repeated, "He lives in my soul and sometimes gets out when I am weak, but that won't happen again."

It slowly staggered back to its feet, "Then...how can I go home?"

Hao Xuan sheathed the sword and slowly walked towards it. He still could not see what it actually looked like. Only its silhouette warped the light around it giving one the impression that something was there.

"Firstly, can you tell me your name?"

It hesitated but then shook its body in response, "I do not have one. We never needed them."

'We? There's more of its kind?'

"Alright, that's not a problem. I can just give you one," he talked to it like a 9-10-year-old child to calm it down.

"Hmm, how about Ryuk? Does that sound like a good name to you?"

"Ryuk?" it repeated several times, "Ryuk...Ryuuuk? Ryuk! I like it! I am Ryuk!!" it proclaimed excitedly while jumping around.

"Nice to meet you Ryuk, my name is Jin."

"Jin?!" It suddenly turned towards him, "Do all humans have many names? Last time you said your name was Hao Xuan!"

'?!?'

"O-Oh, did I say that?"

"Yes, right before you tried to kill me!"

"Well...let's not talk about that right now. Since you already seem to know so much about me, why don't you tell me a little about yourself?"

Ryuk walked back and forth mulling it over, "Hmmm...tell you what? What do you want to know?"

"Uff, where do I start? You said you were 'tied' to me earlier, what did that mean? Do we have some kind of a special bond?"

"Not bond, connection or...dependence? I need you to survive..."

Hao Xuan's brow furrowed. This was quite a reveal.

"How do you mean?"

It sighed as if repeating something for the nth time.

"My kind does not 'eat' like you humans do. We sustain ourselves off of the energy of time but that energy is too spread out outside of the river. Only some select individuals who are bound to create a lot of disturbance in the river naturally give it off."

"Hmm, someone like me then?"

"Yes! You have the most disturbance around! BIG tasty ripples!"

"Around me? Can you actually see it?"

"Not see, perceive. Our senses are different from yours."

"Then...does that mean you can tell when there are other people nearby who also create a lot of disturbance in the river?"

"Of course! They stand out like sore thumbs!"

'!!!'

The implications of Ryuk's ability to pick out these beings was quite important to Hao Xuan.

The river of time flowed in one direction and the ones who stood out and created a disturbance in its flow were the ones trying to go against the current. This meant that-

'I can use him to find out who stands where. The ones who are important enough to create a disturbance could either be important allies or terrible enemies that I need to get rid of as soon as possible.'

"Hmm, okay I think I understand. So you need to stay by my side to feed off of the time energy that is leaking from me, correct? Then how about-"

"Stop!" Ryuk suddenly cut him off, "I know what you are going to say and it is not true!"

"Hoh?" Hao Xuan stepped back, looking in his direction with arms crossed, "What was I going to say?"

"That I am a parasyte! That's what you said last time!" Ryuk wearily added.

'I was not going to say that at all but, let's see where this goes.'

"And you are telling me that's not true?"

"OF COURSE!" he yelled, "Were it not for me getting rid of the energy around you, you would have been killed by the hunters a long time ago!"

"The hunters?" Hao Xuan's eyes narrowed, "Who are they? And why would they come after me? Did I do something to them?"

"They were born in the river like I was but their duties are VERY different I tell you! I am only a watcher, observing what goes on in the world outside but they make sure that all disturbances are taken care of!"

"So they keep the order in the river of time. But how do you feeding yourself help save me?"

"Because that's how they find you, by looking for the disturbance you create wherever you go! If I don't feed on that energy they will be able to tell where you are VERY soon!"

"Huh...is that right?" Hao Xuan's mind began to race.

If that was true then they needed each other to survive, at least for the time being.

'Thanks to Alexander one of my organs is capable of passively absorbing the time energy. Once I strengthen it a little then I might not even need to depend on Ryuk but...that will take a while.'
