The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1495
"Oh, you're back..." Liet casually remarked, much to Hao Xuan's surprise.
"Back? When was I gone?" he questioned curiously.
'Did he sense something?'
Liet nodded, "Just now. Your soul was pulled behind the veil. Looks like it went well? Although you shouldn't go poking there by yourself since it is as dangerous as it is interesting."
Having made sure Hao Xuan was fine, Liet walked back to his corner in silence not bothering to explain any of his points further which made Hao Xuan even more curious than before.
'He was able to sense my connection to one of the Nine?! That's not something just anyone can do. Who the hell is this guy??'
Hao Xuan quickly glanced at the image in the palm of his hand for a few seconds, engraving it into the back of his mind before it disappeared for good.
He was being offered several thousand favour directly from one of the Nine for killing this 'Rain' guy.
'He must have done something particularly abhorrent. And if I'm being offered a 'contract' such as this then it must mean he is within reach, probably somewhere on the city. I'll keep an eye out for him later on but meanwhile, I need to make sure this guy isn't a threat...'
Hao Xuan's expression turned cold. Liet was too big of a threat to be just left alive if he could even sense his connection to the Nine.
He leaned back against the wall and looked at Liet, "So, tell me about yourself. What do you do? How did you get here?"
Liet was trying to fall asleep but upon hearing Hao Xuan's question he immediately perked up.
"You believe me?!" he exclaimed.
"Believe what? I'm just trying to make conversation," Hao Xuan responded with a shrug.
Liet nodded repeatedly while flashing a toothy smile, "Of course of course! There is nothing wrong with that! What do you want to know? I will tell you everything!"
Seeing the look of pure innocence in his eyes even Hao Xuan was taken aback for a moment.
'He can't be this naive right? Might as well ask him directly and see where it goes.'
"How did you know what I was doing just now? How could you tell? Is that a special ability you have?"
Liet clapped like a child getting ice cream after a long time, "Yay! You do believe me! Okay okay I got this!"
He sat up straight and looked directly into Hao Xuan's eyes, "I could tell because I can do the same. Since I already had a foot on the other side of the veil I could sense when you went through."
Hao Xuan frowned deeply, "The veil? You can peer into the veil?!"
Liet nodded for the third time, "I can, the same as you. Do you...know what the veil is?"
Obviously Hao Xuan knew but only through his scant few personal experiences while the rest came from the memories he gained by merging with those countless other souls.
But even so, it would be good to hear what Liet thought of it too.
"Kind of, why don't you tell me what YOU think it is."
"Hmm," Liet rubbed his nonexistent beard in deep thought, "I have never had to explain it but...I think it is the barrier between our world and the spiritual world?"
"The spiritual world? Like one of the Nine Worlds and Ten Heavens?"
"Huh? Uhhh....no?"
Liet played with his earlobes while muttering to himself, "Not a world but a place? But that place doesn't even exist... ok let's do it like this."
He picked up a few rocks and pebbles and placed them in two rows, divided by a clear line.
"You see this?" he said pointing at the line, "THIS is the veil."
Hao Xuan pointed at the right side of the line, "Then what are these?"
"This is us."
"And the other side?"
"Not...us? Haha...ha, please don't be mad!" he could see Hao Xuan losing interest by the second, "It's just really hard to put into words, okay? I've never had to explain it to anyone."
*Sigh*
"I'm not mad but you are not making much sense. What counts as us? And what is on the other side? I get the veil is supposed to be the barrier between our world and the next, but where do you draw the line? What is on the other side?"
Face in hands, Liet could only yell to let out his frustrations, "AAAAGH! There is everything on the other side and then there is nothing too!"
'This autistic dumbass,' Hao Xuan grumbled inwardly, 'I've peered through the veil on several occasions but I could not put it into words. What Hyde said made the most sense although he explained it in the context of what I had experienced. I should treat him as a child and only ask clear, concise questions before he overheats and blows up."
"Alright, let me put it in another way. What do you see when you peer behind the veil? WHY do you do it?"
