Liet took his seat intending to continue their conversation but before he could speak up, he noticed a second presence within the void.

Correctly assuming that Hao Xuan was already in commune with another, he chose to silently observe until they wrapped up their business.

'I can sense that old bastard's memories you just unlocked so I know very well that you understand what that means,' even with Hao Xuan's superb bait Alexander did not bite.

Hao Xuan let out a heavy sigh, 'I forgot you could sense things like that. You're right, I unlocked most of his memories related to the void, and how he got them.'

Alexander responded with a well-deserved scornful laugh, 'Hah! You make it sound as if he did no wrong in his noble pursuit of knowledge. Quite a scholar, wasn't he?'

'I didn't say anything of the sort,' Hao Xuan quickly clarified, 'Just that I am aware of how it unfolded. He lied and manipulated you to understand how your kind operates and that helped him greatly. Even to the point of attaining his own godhood!'

'Then you don't need me anymore, do you? Since you already know everything!'

Alexander cut off their connection and retreated deep into their soul core before Hao Xuan could even respond.

'???'

Hao Xuan was flabbergasted, 'What just happened? Why the hell was he acting so erratic?!'

Just then he heard Liet's voice from the other side, "I feel like that could have gone better," making him chuckle.

"That seems to be the overarching theme for these last 5-10 years."

Liet examined him in excruciating detail, sensing the changes that he had just gone through.

"Huh, you feel a little different all of a sudden. Your shadow is stronger now."

Hao Xuan didn't even try to hide it, "Yeah, that's usually how it goes. Our understanding of the void and the Umbral Planes gives us a stronger presence on the other side, that's what you are sensing."

Liet was more than a little skeptical.

"It sounds like you know even more than me now," he joked but Hao Xuan's response left him momentarily speechless.

"Yes, I remembered a thing or two all thanks to you."

"...."

"Really? Like what?"

"Like..." Hao Xuan wondered just how much he could reveal to him.

If his understanding was at 2/100 before, then it exceeded 80 now. He had digested the results of all the countless experiments the Emperor had conducted during his lifetime, which included everything he had gleaned from the millions of trapped souls.

Add that to the fact that the Emperor needed a certain degree of control over the veil to hide and manipulate from his numerous enemies, it was nothing to scoff at.

In comparison, Liet's knowledge could not possibly be more than 10 or 15 without any formal tutoring in the subject matter.

'Since his connection is quite stable I can use his help for a couple of things later on. Telling him a few basics wouldn't hurt too much,' he concluded and chose to relay much of his newfound knowledge free of cost.

Hao Xuan was technically blind right now, being only able to see vague shapes and shadows but still, he glanced in Liet's direction to keep up the charade.

"How about the veil itself? Would you like me to clarify what it is and how it affects you?"

Liet smiled inwardly, thinking Hao Xuan's words to be little more than gibberish but humouring him nonetheless.

"Well, since you offered, why not?" he got comfortable in his corner and gave full attention to Hao Xuan, "The floor is yours, my friend."

Hao Xuan felt around for some pebbles and drew the same line Liet had a few minutes ago. He placed half on one side and half on the other.

"This is us," he pointed at the rocks closest to the fire, "As a rule of thumb, any creature with a physical form will fall in these ranks. That's the only requirement, having a physical presence of any kind."

Then he pointed to the other side of the line, "This place has many names depending on where you are and who you ask. Some cultures and civilizations call it Hell, some call it the void, or even the spiritual world but for the moment, we will call it the 'Umbral Plane' to avoid any misunderstanding. Is that clear?"

Liet nodded along and even Nae Shin was peeking in on their conversation, which Hao Xuan noticed but chose to ignore.

"Now, the 'Umbral Plane' is primarily home to creatures that do not have a physical form. But that does not limit them since they can move across to the other side if they fulfill a few conditions."

"The 'Umbral Plane' does not abide by the rules of our physical world and yet, they are both inexplicably interwoven on the fabric of existence. They are completely separate while still affecting one another in countless ways. It is not clear which came first, our world or theirs, but it is a fact that all of us exist on both sides simultaneously to some extent," Hao Xuan paused to point at the line dividing the two sets of rocks.
