But as high as that price was, Hao Xuan could not help but feel that it would be worth it in the end. There wasn't any logic to it; it was a simple gut feeling telling him to go through with it.

'Fuck it, why not,' he told himself before focusing on the last "Bless" option.

The total favour fell from 109,060 to 29,060 in the blink of an eye.

The virtual 'screen' suddenly flickered and then vanished without a trace. And before he could even wonder why, everything turned blurry as a searing pain ignited at the back of his head.

"Ungh!"

Hao Xuan quickly grabbed his head but the pain began to extend down to his throat while still tunneling deeper into the brain. It was immeasurable intense as if someone was prodding him with a branding iron through the base of his skull.

"Plegh!"

He threw up a mouthful of bright red blood in the corner of the main hall before running towards the lavatory and locking the door behind him. Something was moving up his gullet and crawling into his brain.

It was an invasive feeling like no other, not even comparable to the time when Baracus had force-fed him millions of pages worth of information.

Thick, viscous blood drops slowly dripped out of his nose and ears, so hot that his skin burned upon contact until he couldn't take it anymore.

"AAAAAAAAAAHHH!"

The scream could not be heard outside the lavatory but it was infused with so much emotion that it created a perceptible disturbance within the void, eliciting a reaction from the Umbral Plane closest to this Night Market.

This disturbance was so small that it was discernable only to a select few individuals most sensitive to the immaterium, one of whom swiftly came out to check.

"What happened?!" Vlitgar asked the merman behind the counter.

Confused, he shrugged with all six tentacles.

Vlitgar surveyed all the patrons and noticed Hao Xuan was missing.

"The human has not returned?"

"He ran in there again," the merman pointed towards the lavatory, "Humans and their sensitive stomachs..."

Vlitgar quickly walked over and listened to the door before knocking once.

"Brot-"

The door opened and Hao Xuan walked out with a rather disheveled look, "Oh, it was Brother Vlitgar. Are you done with your meeting?"

Vlitgar looked him up and down as he passed by, muttering, "Yes...a little trouble..."

Hao Xuan threw him a somewhat disappointed glance, "Ah, another time then."

He tried to walk away but Vlitgar grabbed him by the shoulder, "A little trouble that has been dealt with. Let us return to the 'Attainment Chamber'."

He seemed a little suspicious of him and Hao Xuan could sense it so he did not argue, despite his uncertain condition.

Vlitgar led him back through the door on the right and made sure to shut it behind them. The only difference was in the number of chairs which were reduced to two.

The mirror still took up an entire side but Hao Xuan did not feel like he was being watched this time so it made no difference.

He massaged his throat which was still quite itchy which prompted an eyebrow raise from Vlitgar as he gestured for him to take a seat.

"Is there a problem?" he inquired curiously, "You seem...not yourself."

Hao Xuan pulled out a sheepish smile as if he had been caught doing something naughty, "Just a blessing I did not expect. Its effects were much more....permanent than I anticipated."

"Hmm, yes I know of them. Caution is your best friend, brother. Not every gift is a blessing."

"Well, hopefully, this one is. I spent almost all my favour on it, haha"

Vlitgar let out a disapproving sigh, "Ah, the folly of youth, huh?"

Hao Xuan chuckled awkwardly trying to change the topic, "The trouble you were having, is it really dealt with? If I can help please let me know."

Vlitgar gestured towards the mirror with a defeated look, "Troubles like this never end, brother Jin. Another base of ours was attacked on the 40th layer. These demons are becoming more brazen with each passing day."

Hao Xuan actually turned attentive hearing talk of the demons.

"Did they...did it not end well for your people?"

"We push them back we did, but at a great cost. There are not enough of us with-" he suddenly paused upon remembering something.

"-but there is you now, brother Jin! Just when we needed you the most!"

Hao Xuan choked on air.

*Cough*Cough*

"M-Me? For what?"

Vlitgar walked up to the mirror and drew three runes in the shape of intersecting crescent moons on its surface.

The previously solid surface of the mirror began to ripple like water as a barely visible human silhouette appeared from the other side.

"This!" Vlitgar exclaimed, "If you can learn to use this and help me out during my stay here I will not let your contributions be forgotten!"
