"Why do I do it? To connect with others like me, simple!"

"...."

Hao Xuan was NOT amused by that answer.

'My expectations were low but holy shit, that explains NOTHING!'

"Alright, then HOW do you connect with others like you? Where are they?"

"Where?" Liet continued to scratch his chin, "Everywhere? It's not the location that's a problem but the period they lived in."

"How do you mean? Are you trying to tell me you are able to talk to people from the past and the future??" Hao Xuan leaned forward as his interest piqued.

"No no, how could that be possible?!" Liet shook his head like a drum, "I don't talk to them, just CONNECT with them you know? Like, make a connection?"

Hao Xuan felt like he had gotten hold of a thread so he kept pulling to see where it would lead, "And what do you with this...connection?"

"I listen. To their lives, their sadness, their tears and laughs. Anything they have put out."

"Huh...so...what do you do with that?"

Liet didn't understand where he was coming from, "What do I do? How do you mean?"

"Like, what do you do to make a living? How do you survive? You don't have any spiritual energy and yet you are out here in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by some of the most materialistic people in existence. How do you...stay alive, I guess?"

Hao Xuan thought that was quite a loaded question but to Liet it was the exact opposite. He clapped proudly, "Ohh, I make music! I sing and dance, I am an 'artist' you know?"

'???'

'What? What the fuck does that have to do with the veil?'

"Okay, but how do you leverage your ability to peer behind the veil while making musi- ohh, I get it!"

Hao Xuan answered his question before even finishing it.

Liet smiled, "You really are a smart person, friend Jin. Yes, I can listen to music that others have made. Be it from millions of years in the past or the future, it's all out there floating behind the veil. Those of us with the ability or strength to peer through the veil like you and I, we can listen for things like that, things that interest us."

Hao Xuan leaned back, trying to digest this little tidbit of information that had confirmed several things he already suspected.

"Is that all you can see behind the veil? Nothing else?"

Liet thought about it for a few seconds before answering, "Hmmm, it depends on the person I would say. I can only see what I am capable of, those who are of like mind. But I know other people can do a great number of other things too."

Him mentioning that even brought up several suppressed memories from deep within Hao Xuan's subconscious.

It was quite a special memory related to the Emperor when he first explored the void and peered behind the veil.

Hao Xuan closed his eyes and many of those images flashed past his eyelids. Fantastical shapes and colors he didn't even know existed. Places, people, and creatures casting their long shadows in the void.

His eyelids began to flutter, 'If I focus a little I can see more...show me MORE!'

A flash of glaring light momentarily blinded Hao Xuan and he couldn't even turn away since it was coming from somewhere inside of him.

"ARGH!" he held his eyes in extreme pain.

Liet jumped up and ran to his side, "Are you okay?! What happened??"

"It's fine, I'll be fine..."

"You're bleeding!"

Tears of blood were streaming down Hao Xuan's face but he wasn't too concerned.

"Yeah it's fine, it will heal soon enough."

"Okay...if you're sure."

Hao Xuan tried to open his eyes but could barely see anything even when staring directly into the flames.

'Shouldn't have tried to take in everything all at once...but at least now I know a little more.'

He took a few deep breaths before suddenly pointing at Nae Shin, "I could gouge both my eyes out and you would still have no chance to get away from me. Don't get any foolish ideas," he growled.

Having lost his vision Hao Xuan's other senses kicked into high gear instinctively. From this close, he could hear Nae Shin's muscles tighten every time he flexed even a little.

Nae Shin's body relaxed and he didn't even bother opening his eyes.

"Good boy."

Hao Xuan redirected his attention to the other voice in his head that had chosen to speak up at this very moment.

'You could have asked me,' Alexander quipped, 'As a god I am quite familiar with the void.'

'As a demi-god, there is a difference,' Hao Xuan clarified, making Alexander scoff at him.

'Hmph, as if you would know!'

'Right, since you know so much why don't you tell me what I'm missing? What does you being a god have anything to do with the veil?'
