"T-That's it!?"

Hao Xuan was completely and utterly speechless, especially since Ryuk was even embarrassed of this absurdly powerful ability.

"I know it is not good. I don't even use it..." he added in a weak voice.

Hao Xuan wanted to throw a few swift kicks to his nether regions but realizing the true potential of such an ability, he held it in.

"There is...no need to be ashamed," he continued with a twitching eye, "How does it work? Maybe it could be useful in some other way, you never know right?"

Ryuk recalled the handful of times he had used the ability, "Hmm, it is simple really. I just go up to them and touch their heads with both hands. Obviously they can't feel my touch but it helps if they are not moving around too much. I can see visions of what they were doing when things were not the same. Oh! This one time I came across an old fruit seller with a particularly strong presence!"

It didn't take long for him to get sidetracked with a story of one of those times, and Hao Xuan wasn't planning on stopping him. Ryuk continued in much the same animated manner.

"When I read where his shadow was in the river, I was shocked! Shocked I tell you! Do you know what I saw?!" he eagerly turned to Hao Xuan for answers.

"....No, how would I- what did you see?"

"He was the illegitimate son of the former ruler of his nation! His mother knew this secret of course but she died before she had the chance to tell him. So he spent his entire life as a nobody! A FRUIT SELLER!"

Ryuk noticed Hao Xuan's flabbergasted expression but misunderstood it as contempt.

"Ah, I know what you are going to say. It is useless, you are right. It is only a form of entertainment for when I have nothing better to do."

*Cough*Cough*

Hao Xuan took in a couple of deep breaths to calm down, "No that's- It's okay."

He tried to sound disinterested but on the inside, he was dying.

'HOW CAN ANY LIVING CREATURE BE SO INSANELY FUCKING STUPID!? Does he REALLY not know what that ability could do?? You could walk up to any random person on the street and see what they were capable of! Not only does it allow him to see the potential a person holds but just by the fact that it applies to people who emit a strong presence within the river means- my god! This thing could be a gold mine bigger than any other!'

Not everyone could see the true value of what they had, and Ryuk was the perfect example of that. What was a useless ability in his hands could shift the tide of the war in Hao Xuan's- if correctly used.

"So," Hao Xuan decided to change the topic before his blood pressure rose any higher, "It's settled then? You help me out and I let you feed off of me. Once the opportunity presents itself I will also help you get back to the river. Deal?"

Ryuk pretended to think about it but they both knew he had no choice but to accept.

"Fine, I accept your conditions!"

"Good. I won't ask you to make a soul contract with me so don't try to stab me in the back. Remember, I am the only one who can help you return to the river!" Hao Xuan reminded him on the off chance he still had some doubts.

"I know! You humans and your backstabbing-" Ryuk yelled before his voice suddenly fell to a whisper, "Oh wait! This one doesn't count right??"

Hao Xuan's brow furrowed and he immediately became alert, "This one?! The hell do you mean??"

He started looking around, taking a closer look at his surroundings. He had followed after Ryuk without much thought and only now did he have the time to check where he was.

There were towering walls all around him, coming together in a semi-circle. There were seats on top of these walls and a very sturdy-looking cage separating them from where he was.

The ground was made of dirt and rubble, with quite a few skeletons mixed in.

"Is this...an arena?!"

Ryuk slowly stepped back, stepping on top of a half-buried human skull and breaking it in half. He laughed sheepishly.

"Well...haha, I thought you might try to kill me again so I had to be sure, you know? Since I can't fight, I made sure there was someone else around that could-"

The sound of a rattling chain came from the dunes in the back before the sand began to shift. Hao Xuan immediately turned on his heels hoping to run out the way he came from but the way was already blocked.

It slowly stepped out of the shadows under the shimmering moonlight. Two bright blue eyes swayed back and forth, locked onto Hao Xuan's figure.

It had been there since he came in, waiting patiently...watching.
