The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1626
As inexperienced as he was, even the youngster knew that a realm like this would attract all manner of terribly powerful beings. And even if there wasn't one already here, sooner or later there would be a fight for its ownership and they did not want to be here at that time.
But Elder Khadim was unnaturally relaxed.
"Child, you have already made the most difficult choice," he told the youngster before gesturing towards the sky, "Look there, what do you see?"
The youngster turned his gaze towards the sky which was filled with hundreds of fissures just like the one they had come in from.
"I can't see anything, great father," he dispiritedly muttered, "I am not strong enough..."
All the elders around him chuckled, shaking their heads at his innocent comment.
Elder Khadim smiled as well, "Look beyond what is in the front, child. You cannot see because you tell yourself you cannot. It is all there, waiting for your eyes."
The youngster's brow rose as he gave it another try. This time he didn't try to peek into the fissures but what lay after it. His vision focused and extended beyond the limits he had set for himself.
He saw the sea of clouds and then the mountain range above it, he felt the rumbling volcano spewing hellfire into the air and a blinding silhouette next to it.
"It is him!" he exclaimed.
The elder nodded, "What is he doing? Describe it for me."
"I don't-" in the youngster's eyes the figure of white light was standing still but when he tried to observe it more closely a few other details could be gleaned.
"He is fighting? Defending? HE is the guardian of this realm?!?"
"Very much so," Elder Khadim confirmed, "His power shapes the land and the air, it protects all who are within it. Even now he battles the darkness that comes to devour this land."
The youngster was flabbergasted. Not too long ago he was standing a few meters away from this 'being' itching for a fight, thinking of all the ways he could destroy it.
Only now did he realize how far apart they were because he wasn't even strong enough to see what kind of a battle was taking place outside of this realm.
But still, he wanted to know more.
"Great father, can you tell me what is going on up there?"
"Even I cannot observe all of it, child," Elder Khadim informed him, "We can only infer from the signs. The path we took was created from the aftereffects of their actions- and it will not be the only one."
"What do you mean?"
"See for yourself," the elder raised his palm and a fire lit underneath the youngster's feet, propelling him tens of meters into the air.
From here he could see many of the other fissures spewing out all manner of creatures into the land.
The flame extinguished and he landed with a thud, shouting "There are others!"
"Yes. Some are lucky vermin but many are strong!"
"What do we do then??"
"That is up to you, child," Elder Khadim gave him the option to choose once again.
"You took a great risk coming here but it will not be easy. The guardian of this land came to us seeking knowledge- we may give him that in exchange for a safe harbour until our people are in better health. Or, if you wish, you could make this place home."
He motioned towards the lush forest, "There can be a life here if you so wish it, but it will not be free of cost. You would have to swear fealty to that person and fight for him when the time comes. If he is a just and righteous God then you may prosper, but if not then it could be the end for our people."
The youngster went quiet. It was a huge decision and he could not make it on a whim like that.
"You will have our full support in either case," Elder Khadim clarified and the rest of the elders agreed wholeheartedly.
The youngster looked at the other Djinn who were elated beyond belief, already busying themselves with setting up a temporary camp while cautiously exploring the surrounding area.
The children ran around freely, leaping from tree top to tree top without a care in the world.
"I would want nothing more than to find a refuge from the horrors of the void," he somberly stated, "But I cannot swear allegiance to this being without knowing he has the ability and the compassion to uphold our values. If he is another one of 'them' then what was the point of our struggles?"
Taken aback at first Elder Khadim let out a bellowing laugh, "Hahaha! Well said, child! There is no need to hurry in either case. We will not be beggers at his door!"
The rest of the elders stepped forward overflowing with fighting spirit.
"While he defends the land from horrors outside, we will guard it from the inside. Worry not, we will earn our keep for as long as we stay here!"
