They locked eyes, allowing each of them to get a pretty good luck at the other one.

Where most of its body was shrouded by that grey haze, Hao Xuan could see its off-white eyes as clear as day. And it could see him, although in its eyes he was just an indistinct figure of pure white light.

The 'boy' yelled something in a foreign language allowing Hao Xuan to hear his voice for the first time which was remarkably similar to a human child, before beelining deeper into the rock forest.

Hao Xuan purposefully stayed as far back as he could to follow the child from a safe distance using his spiritual sense but still showed up in his peripheral vision every now and then to make him think he was purposefully losing him.

To the Djinn child's defense, he tried his level best by often going in random directions and even disappearing for a few seconds every so often and then reappearing in a different place moments later.

But the area that Hao Xuan's spiritual sense could cover was several kilometers wide within the Umbral Planes so it did not do the child much good apart from exhausting his internal energy.

This game of cat and mouse continued for several minutes until the child was sure he had lost the tail. But that didn't stop him from taking several detours before cautiously returning to the village he had come from.

It was situated at the top of a small hill deep into the rock forest, underneath a gigantic pillar that was well over a hundred and eighty meters tall and 30+ meters wide. (Reference Images in Discord)

The village itself was not that big with a population of little more than 200.

The last 500 meters in every direction of the village were devoid of any other rock pillars giving them a clear view of anyone approaching.

Instead, there were rows of small totems carved out of stone sitting at a distance of 10 meters from one another around the whole village.

Hao Xuan came to a stop just shy of the totem's range, watching the child sprint into the village from a distance.

'What are these things? They are severely limiting my spiritual sense. Every spiritual thread I send inside is ground to smithereens by an unseen force. Had I rushed in unprepared it could have proved fatal...'

Hao Xuan slowly extended his hand closer to the totems making more than sixty of them suddenly rotate in his direction.

He quickly took a step back but the totems kept their positions, facing his exact location.

'Impressive! It's a defensive array with some level of intelligence that can differentiate between friend and foe,' Hao Xuan complimented from afar, watching as the child ran from hut to hut waking other Djinn up.

'This should be enough for a hello. I'll come back later.'

As he took another step back the commotion within the village reached new heights. Torches were set alight all around the 180-meter-tall stone pillar before they quickly went up in a spiral.

Sections of the pillars began to open up and out came dozens of firebirds of all kinds. The smaller ones were just a meter long but the bigger ones reached over 12 meters in size.

From their beaks to their tails and every single feather in between was shaped from burning embers that ignited the atmosphere to illuminate push the darkness away.

Within seconds the whole area was as bright and warm as a mid-summer's day.

Their chirps and whistling drums created shockwaves, destabilizing and weakening the form of any spiritual being slow enough to be caught within.

Hao Xuan reacted quickly and moved as fast as his soul would allow it, all the while channeling his soul connection to return to the separate space- the so-called 'Land of Imagination'. (Ch 1532)

Unfortunately this created enough of a commotion that several Djinn from the older generation ran out just in time to catch the fleeting image of his ethereal form flicker and dim over the horizon before vanishing altogether.

Hao Xuan used his soul connection like a guiding light to navigate the Umbral Planes and return to the creation space, waking up within the bamboo forest that he had created during the first visit.

The earthy scent of fresh soil and oxygen-rich air permeated his core, leaving him with no choice but to enjoy it as much as he could. There wasn't much natural spiritual energy to speak of but it still felt comfortable here.

'At least it's safe here...' he thought.

"At least it's safe here..." the creature repeated.

'!!!'

He looked back and saw the round blob melting into a black puddle on the otherwise perfect ground.

'How the hell did you get in here?? And WHY?!'

"WHY?!"

'Shut up!'

"sHuT uP!"

'You fuck, are you making fun of me?!'

He tried to stomp it out, punch it away, and kick it into the ether but nothing worked. Like a stubborn stain it refused to leave.
