The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1547
Hao Xuan peeked over his shoulder to make sure she was talking to him, "Come again?"
She was staring unblinkingly at the short letter, holding it in between her frail fingers as if it weighed a ton. There was no one else around so she was definitely speaking to Hao Xuan but it sounded like a rhetorical question, as if she already knew the answer.
"The woman this letter is for. Don't you think she is quite pitiful?"
Hao Xuan sighed inwardly, 'Seems like she is well aware of the situation between the couple. What does she expect me to say?'
"I'm just a slave. What does it matter what I think?" he responded, making her let out a self-deprecating chuckle.
"Then what about everyone else who saw this letter on the way over? Won't they think so? After all, what kind of a woman can't keep her man at home for even a single night? Hasn't she failed as a wife if-" her questions were cut short when she suddenly came to upon seeing Hao Xuan's feet right in front of hers.
She looked up only to see his rather annoyed eyes just a few inches away from hers.
Startled, "What are you-" she tried to step back but tripped on the basket of gardening tools and almost fell over were it not for his quick intervention.
He grabbed her arm and kept her dangling over the basket of sharp tools as he spoke.
"I can't tell if you're just that stupid or purposefully trying to get a rise out of me but let me be very clear: none of it is that woman's fault. It doesn't matter what the 'people' think, it doesn't matter what you or I think. The fact of the matter is that her husband is a whore-mongering wastrel of a human being who is probably too ashamed to show his face here. If it reflects poorly on ANYONE it would be his absentee parents who didn't teach him how to take care of his wife."
"Saying she is to blame for her husband's misdeeds is an astoundingly idiotic and ignorant statement. If you care about this lady at all then you will tell her to leave that man and try to live her own life far away from all this drama."
She stared at him wide-eyed, watching him huff and puff and get so angry for a complete stranger that she forgot what they were talking about for a moment.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean-" she tried to apologize which brought Hao Xuan back to reality. He pulled her up and loosened his grip.
"No, it is my fault. I seemed to have let my emotions get the better of me."
Realizing that he might be drawing parallels between this situation and what he saw in his own childhood, Hao Xuan took a step back and cleared his throat trying to change the topic.
*Cough*
"Um, these crystals. You're not supposed to just shove them in the soil like that. It would be far more efficient to create a simple array that can extract the spiritual energy from the crystals and uniformly spread it among the plants. You could probably do that with half of the spirit stones and get even better results."
Still in a daze from his previous outburst, the girl nodded absentmindedly while rubbing her wrist which had his hand imprint stamped on it.
"Un, thank...you?"
"Yeah n-no problem."
The sound of footsteps came from the back of the house in the nick of time before it could get any more awkward. The same old lady with the tribal face tattoos that had come to give the invite to Nae Shin walked out holding a bag.
She took one look at Hao Xuan and her expression turned sour, "What are you doing here? Who let you in?!"
"Oh, are you...?"
"THE OWNER OF THIS HOUSE!" the girl shouted.
'She must be the poor woman the letter was for. No wonder she's always so pissed off. Better to leave quickly then!'
"Aha! Then...good luck," Hao Xuan threw out the words and ran towards the back of the house to continue down the dirt path leading to the back of the castle.
"WAIT! WHAT WERE YOU DOING HERE?!" the old lady yelled, making Hao Xuan pick up his pace even more.
"Shhh! Don't yell you will scare the plants!" the girl berated her angrily making the old woman shiver.
"Oh my, how could I forget?? I beg your forgiveness, My lady," she got down to one knee.
"Nothing happened so it's fine, but be more careful next time," the girl waved her hand nonchalantly allowing her to get back on her feet.
The old lady gave her a bow from the waist, "Your unwavering beneficence towards this old servant is more than she deserves."
*Sigh*
The girl rolled her eyes, "Didn't I tell you to treat me normally when we are alone? Why must you always keep up this charade?"
"Apologies, my lady. However hard I try I cannot bring myself to that."
"Whatever. Did you deliver the invitation to Nae Shin?"
"I did indeed. I also sent one to the- to Young Master Xuegang as requested."
The girl showed her the crumpled-up letter in her hand, "My dear husband will not be coming tonight."
"Then..."
"Don't worry, Song Yi will never let me be alone with him for even a moment."
