'Then I should first confirm that he indeed has a mark,' Hao Xuan concluded and courteously lowered his head as a sign of respect.

"Then it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Sir Viltgar. Would you mind revealing your mark? I would be much more comfortable knowing that I'm speaking with a comrade from the sanctum."

Viltgar gave an approving look, "It would be my pleasure," before swiping his hand.

A very faint pressure descended on the area giving Hao Xuan a tingling sensation. His eyes widened upon realizing Viltgar's mark came from the Silent Father.

'I did not expect that. How rare! Then I will reveal the same mark so he trusts me more.'

Hao Xuan flashed a friendly smile as if he were meeting an old pal, "What a splendid coincidence! This is the first time I have seen another with the same mark."

His enthusiasm was genuine not only because it was a rare occurrence but also because he had recently upgraded this mark, which Viltgar could clearly sense the moment Hao Xuan revealed it.

Viltgar's eyes widened as he stumbled over to Hao Xuan and grabbed him by the shoulders, "You are also- By the Nine!"

It looked like he had a lot more to say but he kept himself in check surprisingly well.

Hao Xuan smiled inwardly, 'At least his opinion of me should be good now. Doesn't hurt to have friends in high places.'

Viltgar let out a weary sigh and patted him on the shoulder a couple of times before loosening his grip.

"It has been a very long time since I last met another from my camp. If the Great Father has deemed you worthy of his marking then who am I to question, eh?" he said with his head hung low.

Now when he looked at Hao Xuan his gaze was much softer.

'Oh wow, this meant a lot more to him than I expected. Finally something good happened, huh?'

And Hao Xuan was just as happy if not more.

"Sir Viltgar-"

"No no, no sir here. We are brothers!" Viltgar corrected him.

"Then, brother Viltgar, what brings you to this corner of the abyss? Are you only here to confirm the chosen's identity?"

The question had obviously caught him off guard since he didn't even know where to begin.

*Sigh*

"Much is happening, brother Jin," Viltgar began with a weary sigh, "Come sit with me."

Hao Xuan gestured towards the tunnel, "Why don't we go inside? Away from the heat and the light?"

Viltgar looked up and with a surprised expression, "Oh, does that bother you?" he snapped his fingers to summon a grey cloud that encompassed the entire rock formation within seconds.

Gusts of cold wind came down in spades not to mention the much-needed shade it provided from the searing heat.

Hao Xuan felt like he was standing in front of an air conditioner but what he could not believe was the ease with which he managed to summon something so big.

"B-Brother Viltgar, you do not need to push yourself on my behalf. We can just go inside-"

But Viltgar cut him off with a wave of his hand, "I won't hear any more of it. What is a small spell for my kin? Consider it a special gift for this encounter. After all, it is not every day I meet another of my house."

'Kin? Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration? Just because we have the same mark...and spell? This was a spell? He didn't mutter an incantation and I don't see a magic circle anywhere. That means he should probably be a warlock...'

Warlocks were so exceptionally rare that even Hao Xuan had not come across many of them in the other lives, let alone one that was so powerful. But then again, once they got a handle on their abilities it was much easier to keep progressing.

Viltgar motioned towards one of the nearby rocks, "Come, tell me about yourself. How did you come to be here? Were you in a battle?"

Over the course of the next hour, Hao Xuan made up a generic story about fighting some demons back in his home world and then following them back to the abyss for revenge. He also credited his internal injuries to them, painting himself as a hero along the way.

"The next thing I knew I was in this place. Luckily I was picked up by that city and came across the chosen in there. There seems to be a lot going on here."

Viltgar's expression was a mix of unadulterated rage and compassion.

"My brother, everything happens for a reason. I believe you were brought here for a more noble purpose than simple revenge. The Great Father wanted us to meet, it was all by the will of the Nine!"

Hao Xuan wanted to laugh but the somber look in Viltgar's eyes said otherwise. He meant every single word of that.

'Unfortunately for you, I AM their plan. They are not as almighty as you make them out to be.'

But he knew better than to say it out loud and risk an argument with a powerful religious fanatic so-

"I agree, brother. After all, what are the chances of us meeting here like this?"
