Not only was Hao Xuan fighting the Wraith on its home turf without his sight, but all that without using any abilities that require spiritual energy.

If that were any other cultivator it would be a death sentence for them because the intense Yin energy would interfere whenever they tried to use any skills and might even backfire. It would be akin to lighting a match inside a tornado of methane gas.

Nae Shin wondered, 'If we were to fight in the same realm, how could I possibly beat him when all my skills depend on internal energy?!'

These precious children of powerful ancient clans were terribly proud of their special abilities and techniques that had been passed down to them for generations. But there was little else they could do when using them wasn't an option anymore, simply because they never had to depend on anything of the sort.

Rather than a boon that aided in their growth, these legacies became crutches that held them back.

After more than a hundred blue flashes had gone off Hao Xuan finally cut through the Yin energy to land back inside the structure. Half of his beard was frozen while several inch-long ice shards were coming out of his arms and legs.

"Are you o-okay??" Nae Shin stutteringly inquired, "Did you win? Is it over?"

Hao Xuan casually reached out and began pulling out the icicles, "Why wouldn't I be okay? And I won, barely, but it's not over. It ran away before I could finish it."

Nae Shin looked around warily with a deepening frown. Lowering his voice to a whisper he asked, "Should we chase after it?"

Hao Xuan shook his head once, "No need, it's too weak to do anything right now but because of that, not only will it be harder to track without proper gear but we also have much bigger things to worry about," he gestured towards Liet.

"He's been gone too long," Hao Xuan said while throwing the sword over to Nae Shin.

He grabbed it by the handle before immediately dropping it upon sensing the intense decaying energy of the wraith coursing through it.

"Put it away, I'll exorcise it later."

"O-Okay!"

Nae Shin wrapped it with a piece of cloth that was lying around and stored it in his personal storage space. By the time he looked over Hao Xuan was already sitting cross-legged in front of Liet.

He gingerly crept up without making any noise, pausing a meter away from them both.

"What will you do? Won't it be dangerous?"

Hao Xuan threw him a menacing glare, "Why do you keep talking like a coward!? Where did all that bravery go from a few hours ago? Just because something's dangerous doesn't mean you have the luxury of not doing it. Stay silent if you have nothing productive to say!"

His harsh words rightfully silenced Nae Shin as he stepped back and lowered his head, not even looking at him. Seeing him like that Hao Xuan quickly realized his mistake, and the fact that this emotional outburst was not really directed at him at all.

He was in fact quite uncertain about what to do next and Nae Shin vocalizing his inner thoughts left a sour taste in his mouth.

*sigh*

"Come here," he asked in a much gentler tone, pointing at the spot to his immediate right.

Nae Shin followed his instructions obediently which made him feel even worse. He was yelling at a child for asking questions.

'I'm turning into my uncles. I can already see grampa shaking his head at me,' and now he was berating himself with thoughts of his old life on earth, which was quite a surprise, 'What's happening to me??'

He looked up at Nae Shin who still wasn't meeting his gaze.

"Liet went behind the veil to close the breach from the other side but is stuck there now, probably thanks to the Umbral entity that was trying to keep it open. Normally under these circumstances there is little that can be done since it can be extremely dangerous to try and find a lost soul on the other side."

He grabbed a hold of Liet's ice-cold hands as threads of spiritual sense wrapped around their arms to connect them as one.

Hao Xuan took a few deep breaths to regulate his breathing and blood flow before flashing Nae Shin a toothy grin.

"But it is different because I am here! I can use Liet's body to find his soul before it's too late and bring him back because I am THAT good!"

Nae Shin looked at him with a puckered brow, realizing that he was joking.

"Why? Why not leave him? You just met..."

"Didn't I say so already? Because I'm STRONG! I can do it, so I shall. And he trusted me so I will not betray his trust but...this is not how you should do it if you were to ever come across such a situation-" Hao Xuan cracked his neck and back while closing his eyes.

"Because once you see what lies beyond the veil- once you enter the Umbral planes, you can never go back. You leave yourself open to a dimension that was never meant for mortals like us..."

When Hao Xuan opened his eyes again he was on the other side.
