The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1620
"Hey! Are you going to buy something or not, slave?!"
Hao Xuan's thoughts were interrupted when the shopkeeper waved a dust cloth in his face to bring him back to reality.
He was standing standing over a stray canine beast inspecting it for injuries.
"Sorry?"
The shopkeeper with the two goat horns pointed at the signboard hanging overhead.
"You're in the way! If you're just gonna stand there and talk to yourself then at least take your clothes off so it brings in someone with some actual gold!"
'?!?'
"I was leaving anyway..." he responded while walking away.
'Is it just me or are people getting more ridiculous??'
[It was certainly odd] Ryuk chimed in from somewhere nearby.
[Did that creature not live up to the mark?]
Hao Xuan shook his head dejectedly.
'No, it didn't have an owner so its connection to the current timeline is very weak. There need to be some strong emotions in the mix otherwise it will be far too weak. And that one was almost dead anyway.'
[Do you know for certain it will work? What if it was something else?]
"Hmm...good point."
Hao Xuan turned on his heels to march back to the shop. He picked up the half-dead pup covered in filth and grime and sprinted away before anyone could notice.
He returned to the abandoned Beast Market with the critter and left it at the hideout before running away in another direction.
[It doesn't have long left] Ryuk warned.
"I know. But it needs to be in a better condition before I attempt the transference, it's not even conscious anymore."
[What will you do then?]
"Make some damn gold first. Then I can buy some healing potions and other tools."
[That's it?]
"That's it? You think that's easy??" Hao Xuan came to an abrupt stop in front of a random wall.
"Were it not for this it would take so much longer to get things done," he commented while slowly passing through the wall to enter the Night Market.
[Ohhh! So this is where you went!]
This time Ryuk tagged along too.
"Yeah. It's a good thing Vlitgar left the door open, the man is a lifesaver."
Hao Xuan couldn't help but admit how valuable he had been.
[What now?]
"Now we make some gold!"
Hao Xuan headed to the first shop he had the pleasure of visiting with Longtrouble. It was the third one on the right with red paper lanterns hanging from the awning.
There was a letter inscribed on each lantern creating the words "Poli's Marvelous Rocks".
"Excuse me, Miss Poli? I need to buy a few rocks," Hao Xuan called out while sliding the door open.
"That voice...you came with little Tamari earlier?" (Ch 1573)
"Yes."
"Come in come in! All are welcome here!"
The lights came on so Hao Xuan ventured inside. Poli still didn't reveal herself but it didn't matter since he already knew what to do.
"I'll be quick then."
"Hehehe, take all the time in the world...dear customer!" she cackled in her raspy old voice, which was eerier enough to give anyone goosebumps.
For the next half an hour Hao Xuan went over each and every rock within the shop to pick the ones he found the most peculiar.
The total came out to over 15,000 Cursed Gold for nearly 80 rocks and crystals of all shapes and sizes.
"These ones," he brought them to the counter.
"Ooooh, so many! Are you sure, young man? You should be more responsible with your recently acquired wealth..."
Despite her words coming across as more of a threat than advice Hao Xuan did not mind it.
"Yes I'm sure," he quickly made the payment to finish the transaction.
"Would you like to unseal them now? If there is something that interests me then I will buy it at the market rate," Poli offered.
Hao Xuan didn't even have to think about it because he was planning that from the start. There were far too many rocks to be just lugging around.
"Deal!" he shouted before moving over to the glass box.
The 72 runes came to life one after the other as Hao Xuan unsealed each and every rock, although it did take over 2 hours.
But by the end he was standing at the counter with a wide grin.
"What do you think?"
Poli had no choice but to come out and see the products in person. She was actually a small wooden doll or rather, was controlling it for the time being.
The doll had a face smeared on with some ugly paint and human hair nailed to the head.
"T-This is- your luck is...truly a blessing!" the doll exclaimed.
"So I've heard," Hao Xuan grinned, "Now then. By my count, the total comes out to be three million six hundred and seventy-four thousand- give or take a few hundred."
The doll's painted eye twitched, "Y-Yes, that is almost...exactly right...how did you-"
"Don't worry about that Poli," Hao Xuan waved his hands as if he was doing her a favour.
"And since we are friends I will make a deal with you. Give me 3.5 million in Cursed gold, and 150,000 in normal gold which I can use in the outside world. That way it saves me extra work and you make bank on that exchange rate. Deal?"
"Make bank? I don't understand what those words mean but..."
Poli glanced at the table full of literal treasures and finally gave in. Even she couldn't bear to haggle with all of them sitting in front of her face like this.
"We have a deal!"
