"Wha-What I expect you to do?? I expect you to OPEN THIS FUCKING CAGE AND LET ME IN!" he screamed in a panic, punching the barrier with his bare hands with such ferocity that it stripped the skin off his knuckles.

But Hao Xuan was unbothered by the display of intense emotions as he watched the guard's blood paint the sand beneath his feet in a beautiful cherry red.

It was mesmerizing...

"Oi! Listen to me you slave bastard! Open this barrier RIGHT FUCKING NOW!" he roared upon seeing Hao Xuan getting lost in his thoughts.

"OPEN IT!" he punched the barrier again with such force that it created shockwaves around his position.

Hao Xuan let out a deep sigh and after glancing over his shoulder to make sure Che Yun hadn't returned he nodded.

"Alright chief, relax," he said throwing his hands up in defeat, "I'll open it, alright? Just let the boss man know that I helped when we go back. Master Rufus will definitely award me another few days off. Do we have an understanding?"

The guard passionately bobbed his bovine head up and down making his ears flap like pixy wings.

"Yeah deal! I'll talk to master Rufus myself, don't you worry boy! Be quick!"

"Your wish is my command chief," Hao Xuan kicked one of the flags lose, creating a hole in the barrier for the guard to walk through before moving back.

The guard sprinted in and promptly fixed the flag behind him.

"Oh, thank the gods! I thought I was going to die there for a minute, hahaha!"

He wiped the sweat off his brow and turned to face Hao Xuan who was waiting for him with half a smile.

"I won't forget what you have done for me, slave!" the guard walked up to him and wiped his bloody hands on his robe.

"When we get back I will surely put in a good word for you!" he reiterated.

Hao Xuan nodded along, smacking his lips as he did so.

"Hmm, I appreciate that chief-"

The guard patted him on the shoulder and turned to the right trying to head back to the carriage.

"-Just one question though."

The guard looked over his shoulder in annoyance, "Huh? Quickly now, what do you need-"

*Squelch*

Hao Xuan's arm pierced his chest and came out of the other side with his beating heart.

The guard's mouth fell open as he slowly looked down in shock, spilling blood everywhere.

"Wha- have you...done..." he hoarsely muttered.

Hao Xuan pulled his arm back letting the guard fall on his face. He breathed his last few breaths before all bodily functions ceased.

*Thud*

After landing a swift kick to his side Hao Xuan was confident he was dead so he started inspecting the heart.

Nothing stood out at first glance but he had a weird feeling that something was off about it. There was also a familiar scent mixed into his blood which should have been strongest in his heart but-

"Hmm...was I wrong? I don't smell it anymore..."

He made a fist to crush the heart to smithereens while walking over to the flag to inspect the defensive array.

"Tsk, it's still up too. Don't tell me I killed him for no reason."

Che Yun ran out of the tunnel while yelling, "It's all good sir! Everything is fin-"

But when he saw the guard's corpse the boy froze mid-stride.

"W-What happened?! Are we under attack sir?"

Hao Xuan sighed inwardly, 'How do I explain this one?'

"Oh yeah, I think we might be," he threw out the words without even thinking about it while trying to cover his ass.

"Really??"

Che Yun ran into the camp and quickly packed up everything, "I'm ready sir, let's go find the others!" he said a moment later.

"Er, sure...we can do that..."

Hao Xuan was out of excuses so he couldn't deny the boy.

"But when we go back let's not say anything to the rest until we know what's going on, understand?"

"Sir?" Che Yun's confused expression mirrored his state of mind, "B-But shouldn't we tell everyone that one of the guards was killed so they can catch the person who did that?"

"Haha..."

Hao Xuan hid his bloody hand behind his back while approaching the boy, "Let me handle that. You just take care of the tools-"

But all of a sudden the hair on his arms stood up like needles and his senses screamed bloody murder.

Hao Xuan's hearts thumped in unison in preparation for what was to come. Each of his senses skyrocketed as time came to a standstill.

From the corner of his eye, he could see movement both on the immediate right and left but only the left one was overflowing with energy and coming straight for his head.

He gently pushed Che Yun back while turning sideways along with the projectile as it scratched his cheek while passing by.

With the second breathe time returned to its original flow in his eyes as an explosion rocked his eardrums.
