The Dawn of the New World Chapter 1586
Hao Xuan was caught so off guard by a girl half his size that he was at a complete loss for words.
She had no spiritual energy of her own, no signs of any special bloodlines or other unique powers, no magic to speak of, and yet, there was an odd aura about her person that made her appear 'unordinary' in his eyes.
"You are...a strange person," he commented without thinking, garnering a satisfied smile from Lady Yuki.
"Thank you."
"That wasn't a compliment-"
*Knock*knock*knock*
Their interaction was cut short when the knocks sounded from the other side.
Hao Xuan let out a deep sigh while flexing his arms, "If there is a fight try to run straight out and don't ever come back. And if there isn't- just follow along with whatever I say."
She looked him up and down, making a side note of the poised manner with which he handled himself.
'It is not often a slave is so....confident in their abilities. What is his background? Does he work for the inn?' she wondered.
If it came down to it she was willing to reveal her real identity as the daughter-in-law of the Song clan so she was not that worried despite the grim circumstances but she couldn't understand why he wasn't.
Hao Xuan readied himself for at least a quick clash before having to reveal one of his marks to calm the situation down. If they simply ran in then he would have no choice but to defend himself in the heat of the moment.
But as he opened the door there was only one person in front of him, with all the rest standing several meters back.
Both that person and Hao Xuan were surprised to see each other.
"Brother Vlitgar!" Hao Xuan exclaimed and Vlitgar grinned ear to ear in response.
"Brother Jin, what a spectacular surprise!" but he suddenly frowned, "You were the one trying to sneak into the backroom??"
Hao Xuan waved his hands while motioning towards Lady Yuki, "That was her. She was just a little confused and got lost. I tried to clear up the misunderstanding with the tentacle boy but-"
The merman was being held up by two small flying insect-like creatures but when he overheard their conversation and started convulsing.
"MISUNDERSTANDING?!" the merman hollered, "MY HAND IS BROKEN! HOW WILL I WORK NOW?!"
The insects dragged him over to Vlitgar so he could show off his squished tentacle which still had Hao Xuan's heelprint on it.
"Great Lord, look at what this human has done to me! It was my favourite arm!"
Vlitgar inspected his tentacles and then turned towards Hao Xuan, "What say you, brother Jin?"
Waves of hushed murmurs spread throughout the crowd as they intervened with their own two cents.
"He's right, you can't just mess with a man's hands like that!"
"Yeah!! Who will make our drinks now??"
"That's right, I'm so thirsty! We should be compensated for our troubles!"
"Doesn't he have like seven other arms though?"
"Shut up, what do you know?!"
"He should buy a round for everyone!"
"YEAH!"
But their words fell on deaf ears because only one person's opinion mattered right now.
And Hao Xuan had spoken long enough with him during their last interaction that he knew exactly the kind of personality Vlitgar held so he shrugged with such inherent indifference that one would think there was no problem to speak of.
"Does the Lord of the Jungle care what the prey thinks of him? Why should I bother with the weakness of others? He should be thanking me for not taking his pathetic little life!"
As he finished Hao Xuan unleashed the mark of the Silent Father since that was the one he had shown off to Vlitgar before.
The mighty aura accompanying a mark of the Nine immediately silenced all the pointless chatter. But the shock only lasted for a few seconds before they readily accepted that Hao Xuan was beyond reproach.
"Oh! Why didn't he just say so sooner?"
"I knew there had to be something, he was giving off a very special aura!"
"Mhm! I knew from the start he had a mark of the Nine!"
"...then why did you say he had to buy a round for everyone??"
"SHUT UP! WHAT DO YOU KNOW?!"
*SMACK*
The crowd dispersed leaving only the merman and Vlitgar behind.
Vlitgar glanced at the merman, "Your response?"
The merman smacked away the flying insect creatures and stood upright while brushing off his pants.
"Can't blame a merman for trying, eh?"
The injured tentacle squirmed and fell off his body like dandruff. He kicked it into a corner and went back to the bar like nothing ever happened.
Hao Xuan was momentarily dumbstruck by the sudden change in their behavior.
"Is it...always like that?"
Vlitgar shook his head, "Only in out-of-the-way places like these. Most of them are servants of lesser gods so they know their place. Now that we have settled that, let us speak some more brother."
Vlitgar gestured towards the other door on the right which gave Hao Xuan a bad feeling.
