Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 138: The Most Efficient Demolition

4 min 1 views

"I took a part-time job as a demolition negotiator, and I ended up finding some 'vintage' building materials—namely, human remains!"

Nancy quickly briefed Simon on the entire situation.

Simon’s tone turned professional and sharp. "Understood. Don't say a word to anyone else for now."

"I’m reporting this to Sam immediately to get a warrant and a dispatch team!"

A thought suddenly struck Nancy, and she asked hurriedly, "If there are bodies in the walls, do we still need the holdout owner’s permission to tear the house down?"

Simon let out a low, grim chuckle. "Of course not."

"Finding bodies in a concrete wall—especially more than one—upgrades this to a major criminal investigation. Removing those walls becomes a mandatory part of the forensic search."

He explained patiently, "Property rights and demolition compensation issues all take a backseat to a homicide investigation. Police procedure takes absolute priority."

Nancy’s heart, which had been pounding out of fear, now beat even faster with excitement. "So you're saying this holdout's house is coming down soon?"

"It’s coming down immediately," Simon replied.

"Once we send a team to confirm the wall is compromised, we’ll likely start the demolition tonight. We'll work through the night."

Nancy felt a jolt of surprise. "Wow, that fast?"

Simon lowered his voice, his tone darkening. "Furthermore, you mentioned the owner refuses to let anyone touch the house regardless of the price. That makes the owner a prime suspect for murder."

"I’m giving you an assignment. Keep an eye on the owner and the site, but don't spook him. I’ll get there as fast as I can."

Nancy’s face grew serious and determined. "Mission accepted!"

After hanging up, Nancy buried her face in the weasel’s soft fur and took a deep breath. "Snowball! You are officially my little lucky star!"

Snowball tilted his head, his black-bead eyes full of confusion. "Is finding bodies in a wall considered good luck? Human standards for luck are so strange..."

"No... that’s not it." Nancy’s lip twitched as she thought about the lightning-fast demolition. "We should definitely aim for less of this specific kind of 'luck.'"

Ideally, she wanted to stop people from dying in the first place.

She rubbed Snowball’s soft belly and whispered, "It’s because of you that those souls trapped in the concrete can finally see the light of day."

Her finger brushed the little creature’s cool nose. "You pried open a silent coffin and gave the truth a chance to come out. That’s what makes you incredible."

"So don't be afraid of the bodies. The dead aren't scary; it’s the bad people who caused those deaths who are terrifying."

Snowball let out a soft, uncertain chirrup and curled his tail around her wrist. Nancy felt a wave of affection and rubbed his round little head. "Don't worry, I'll protect you. I'll zap all the bad guys if they approach you!"

Remembering the task her brother gave her, Nancy thought about how to stay on-site without looking suspicious. Since the Tabby had been "patrolling" since they arrived, Brendan’s men hadn't seen him yet.

Nancy hit upon a plan. Holding Snowball, she put on a look of frantic distress and started "searching" for her cat. "Tabby! Where are you?"

She began wandering the area.

"Tabby, stop playing around! Come back so we can go home!"

"These people are such bullies... I can't even get a word in with the owner. How am I supposed to negotiate a demolition like this?"

Brendan’s lackeys, seeing that Nancy couldn't get past their "defensive line" and had now lost her pet, were delighted by her misfortune.

"This is hilarious. Who brings a pet to a job site? What is she, three years old?"

"Talk about a total loss. She lost her dignity and her cat."

"It’s her own fault for being incompetent. If you don't have the guts to talk to an owner, you shouldn't be in the demolition business."

Nancy ignored them. The thought of the house being torn down tonight—solving a massive problem for Director Roberts and bringing her animals one step closer to the government payroll—filled her with such relief that her eyes actually grew red and welled with tears of joy.

Brendan’s men started jeering again.

"Look at that, her eyes are red. She’s about to cry."

"Hey, you want us to help you find your kitty?"

Nancy glared at the thugs through her teary eyes. "Drop dead!"

"I don't need your help!"

She continued her "helpless and pathetic" search. "Tabby! Forget the demolition, let's just go home! Waaaaah!"

The lackeys laughed even harder.

In the distance, the Tabby was trotting over with his subordinates. Hearing Nancy calling for him like a lost child, his tail curled into a giant question mark.

Nancy walked right up to the Tabby and squatted down piteously. "Little kitty, have you seen a tabby cat that looks just like you?"

"Are you trying to act like you've lost your memory, woman?"
