Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 170: The Man Behind The Door
Nancy had quickly recorded that dialect message and sent it to her brother, Simon, with her fingertips trembling. She attached a voice note: "This is a dialect message a caller just sent. We can't understand it; find a colleague from Cloudtopia to help listen to it!"
Simon had instructed Nancy to report her whereabouts every time she went out. Tonight, before leaving, Nancy had already sent him the address of where she was going and briefly explained the situation. Now that an emergency had arisen, it saved a significant amount of time!
Simon received the message and replied almost instantly: "I'm heading over now. I've forwarded the recording to a colleague. If there's any anomaly, backup will be dispatched immediately. I've also contacted the nearest hospital for an ambulance."
Scanning the words on the screen, Nancy saw that Simon had already thought of every possibility. She took a deep breath, and her tense nerves finally managed to relax slightly.
At this point, Elsa had already put on her shoes and was about to open the door.
Nancy stopped her from opening it and looked up, asking urgently, "Exactly which unit does she live in?"
Elsa's face was pale as she pointed out the window. "Unit 203 in the next building." You can get there through the connecting corridor. There are many flowers planted at her door; it's very easy to recognize."
"We'll go together," Nancy said, grabbing her. "It's safer if the three of us look out for each other."
She didn't forget her secret weapon. Nancy turned to the fat bat by the window, which was sneaking some of Elsa's leftovers, and whispered, "Help us check if there's anyone outside the door?"
The little fat bat flapped its wings twice and mumbled indistinctly, "Safe... safe... no one else!"
The three of them quickly pushed the door open and stepped out. Under Nancy's instructions, they tried their best to keep their footsteps light.
Nancy hurried to keep up while pulling out her phone to dial a number. "Master Crow, emergency! Please go to unit 203 in the next building immediately and check. A window or an exhaust vent is fine. Tell me immediately if there is anything unusual!"
A short crow's cry came from the other end: "Right away!"
The three of them hid by a narrow alley window next to the corridor, crouching down in the shadows and keeping their breathing very low. Elsa's eyes were red, and she suddenly tried to stand up and rush forward, but Nancy pulled her back.
"I've already sent the crow to scout the way," Nancy said, her voice extremely tight, each word squeezed through her teeth. "The situation is unclear; we can't just rush in like this. We have to protect ourselves to save the grandmother!"
Elsa was shaking all over, her voice full of irrepressible sobs. "But what if she has already..."
Just then, a dark shadow swept swiftly across the night sky and landed steadily on Nancy's shoulder. Master Crow was back. Its feathers were slightly ruffled as it whispered urgently in her ear:
"Don't go, don't go! I looked inside through the gap in the range hood—" It paused, its beak close to her ear. "There's a man in the room, crouching behind the door... wearing a gray hoodie, not moving a muscle."
Hearing this news, Nancy's heart wrenched. She instinctively reached out to hold the other two back, her voice kept extremely low. "Master Crow said... there's a man crouching by the door."
Autumn and Elsa turned deathly pale upon hearing this. They looked at each other, seeing only terror and unease in each other's eyes. Nancy immediately signaled them to be silent and quickly led them to retreat quietly, moving away from the corridor that might expose them and back into the relatively safe shadows behind the corner.
Only then did she ask the little crow on her shoulder in a hurried whisper, "What about the landlady? How is she?"
Master Crow flapped its wings anxiously, its head shaking repeatedly. "She's collapsed on the floor, her hands shaking and shaking... she can't catch her breath. It looks like a heart attack! She must have been scared by that bad man!"
"The landlady really is having an attack; she must take her emergency medicine immediately!" Nancy's voice trembled with urgency, a surge of adrenaline hitting her. "But that bastard is in the room right now!"
At that moment, she wished she were possessed by Simon so she could burst through the door and deal with the thug directly. Nancy forced herself to calm down, her mind racing.
"We have to make a big scene to scare him off first and buy time to save her!" Nancy quickly stated her idea, but then a greater worry surfaced, making her throat tighten. "...I'm just afraid he won't run, but instead... instead, he'll take her hostage!"
Autumn and Elsa were also sweating with anxiety. Nancy lowered her voice and quickly assigned tasks. "We'll pretend to be community staff called by Elsa for an emergency. If all three of us make a noise, the commotion might be enough to scare him off."
Just then, the little fat bat flapped its wings and flew over, hanging precisely upside down on the balcony railing. Under Nancy's daily supervision, and because there were no family members here to constantly feed it snacks, it was much more alert than usual.
