Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 172: The Unshakable Consultant
As soon as the call disconnected, Nancy skillfully initiated a screen share, transmitting the dynamic positioning data to Simon's phone in real-time.
At that moment, several flashlight beams from the neighbors swept up from the stairwell as voices drew closer:
"Oh my, it's Madam Loraine's house, isn't it?"
"Goodness... she's already been carried into the ambulance. It looks grim."
"I heard she was stabbed three or four times! At her age, how can she possibly survive that..."
"For real? That's terrifying..."
Nancy stood frozen in place with her phone in hand, momentarily caught between laughter and tears. Wasn't it a collapse due to a heart attack? How has it already turned into 'three or four stab wounds'?!
She watched the growing crowd and flickering lights, letting out a silent sigh. The speed at which rumors took flight was perhaps even faster than Little Fatty chasing down a criminal!
Nancy raised her voice and spoke clearly, "Please, do not believe or spread rumors!"
"Madam Loraine was not stabbed by the perpetrator." She suffered a heart attack and has been rushed to the hospital for treatment!"
An elderly man frowned, asking in a skeptical tone, "Little girl, who are you? Standing here saying such things."
Nancy replied calmly, "I am a special consultant invited by the police, responsible for assisting in solving the recent series of home invasions."
Hearing this, the man tucked his hands behind his back and let out a sneer. "The person is long gone, yet you're standing here without moving a muscle?"
"Is this consultant of yours 'all talk and no action'?"
"Little girl, how much did you pay for that consultant ID? I often dine with the leaders of the municipal bureau; how come I've never heard of this?"
As the man finished, murmurs began to rise from the crowd.
Someone interjected, "Exactly! Last week, in an old community less than two kilometers from here, there was another break-in. When the culprit saw the man in bed roll over and thought he was waking up, he stabbed him three times! The man still hasn't regained consciousness!"
"If you police were actually capable, how could you fail to catch a single person?"
Just then, several officers from the local station arrived at the scene. Seeing the corridor packed with people, they frowned and prepared to put up a cordon to begin their investigation.
Nancy remained unhurried and presented the consultant credentials issued personally by Captain Yang.
"Ms. Nancy!"
The officers' eyes lit up, and they immediately became excited.
Ever since Nancy and Simon teamed up to solve the sensational tomb-robbing murder case, the names of the siblings had spread throughout the system. With official commendations and stories of their deeds circulating, almost everyone knew: if these two appeared, no matter how thorny the case, the solution was not far off!
"Are we going to take down the culprit in one go this time?"
"Has your brother arrived as well?"
"How should we coordinate with you now?"
They spoke with such enthusiasm that they clearly regarded her as the pillar of the operation.
At that moment, the noisy, meddling old man frowned and mocked loudly, "What kind of nonsense is this?!"
"With so many officers here, you actually have to listen to a little girl bossing you around? No wonder the cases go unsolved and the killers aren't caught!"
Nancy turned a deaf ear to the man's cynical mockery. She had long understood one thing. In any profession dealing with the public—be it the police or doctors—one inevitably encounters scenes of amateurs trying to lecture professionals. To take these amateurs seriously would only lower her own standards.
Back in her university days, Nancy was often brought to the Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital to help. Not only was there no special treatment, but she also witnessed all sorts of unreasonable families of patients. Over the years, she had long since developed an immunity to such people.
Nancy lived by a simple rule: when faced with groundless questioning, never fall into the trap of self-justification.
She borrowed two phones from the officers. On one, she maintained the call with Simon; on the other, she dialed Master Crow's smartwatch.
"What's the situation on your end? Can you keep up?" Nancy's voice betrayed an urgent worry. "The officers have arrived here, and the victim has been sent to the hospital."
At that moment, Simon's voice came through the receiver, accompanied by hurried breathing: "I've already parked the car near the perpetrator's neighborhood. I'm entering the dark alleys now!"
Nancy had only said a few words to Simon when the old man nearby immediately put on an "I knew it" expression and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Look at that! I told you she was a 'connection' hire!"
"The sister holds a government post, and the brother is on the public payroll too. The whole family really knows how to work the system!"
"I suppose the dog at home has been made into a police dog as well?"
These piercing words made the surrounding officers frown. But when they turned to look at Nancy, they saw that, despite her young age, there wasn't a hint of emotion on her face. She was purely focused on listening to the phone, her entire attention concentrated on the call with Simon.
That extraordinary composure made the officers secretly marvel; this little girl truly knew how to keep her cool!
