Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 28: The Corpse Beneath The Bed
"It looks like…"
The neighbor wiped the sweat from his forehead but didn’t dare finish the sentence.
"The hamster said it smelled a human under the bed. I wasn’t sure at first, so I didn’t dare say anything."
Nancy took a bite of her apple. "Well, now I think it’s time you call the police."
Sunny’s hands trembled as she dialed.
Her place was just a one-bedroom—there was nowhere to hide.
Thankfully, the couple next door stayed with her until the police arrived.
It was already past nine o’clock, and the sky outside was pitch black.
Sharing the room with what might be a corpse chilled everyone to the bone.
Meanwhile, the livestream had surged to ten thousand viewers.
"Damn, this pet channel just turned into a crime show."
"Is the streamer secretly Conan? Two streams in one day, two murder cases. Poisoning, hidden bodies… what’s next, ghosts?"
"Well then, I’m moving into this livestream. Who needs Netflix?"
"I came here for animal talk, now I’m too scared to use the bathroom. Can we go back to wholesome content please?"
Twenty minutes later, the police arrived.
Since Sunny had found Nancy through a local feed, they were both in Sunnyville. The officers were from the Sunnyville precinct, and a forensic team came along too.
The police sealed off the area with tape.
The plastic-wrapped figure was carried out and unwrapped by the forensics team.
Sunny and her neighbors waited in the hallway.
As the plastic came off, a sharp chemical odor filled the air.
The nosy neighbor lady peeked in—and nearly vomited up her dinner.
She stumbled back, gagging violently.
Inside, the forensic officer reported, "The victim has been dead for over twenty days. The body was soaked in preservatives. The killer vacuum-sealed it using food-grade plastic. They even added activated charcoal inside the wrapping. That’s why the smell was masked."
Sunny collapsed against the wall, trembling all over, hugging her shoulders. "Oh my God… I’ve been sleeping back-to-back with a corpse for half a month…"
The chat exploded in horror.
"This murderer is insane. Who hides a body under someone’s bed?"
"I was listening to music and the lyric said ‘back-to-back embrace’—I just peed myself."
"I checked under my bed with a flashlight, and a roach fell on my head. Kill me now."
"Quietly pulling my feet back under the blanket."
The hamster was brought out too. This time it wasn’t shaking.
It nestled calmly in Sunny’s palm, wrapping its pink little paws around her finger as if to comfort her.
Its beady black eyes looked curiously at Nancy through the phone screen.
"Thank you!"
"The scary thing under the bed has finally been found."
Nancy smiled at the hamster’s soft, childlike voice. "You’re welcome. When did you first notice it?"
The hamster’s whiskers twitched. "Just after we moved in. I was running around the room and accidentally knocked my little carrot under the bed."
Nancy tilted her head. "Your little carrot? A chew toy shaped like one?"
The hamster nodded eagerly. "I love it so much. If I don’t gnaw, my teeth itch. Every time I tried to crawl under the bed to get it, I got so scared I ran back out."
Its pink paws twisted nervously. "I got so scared that it made me pee myself… I didn't mean to do that."
Nancy reassured it. "It’s not your fault. You were brave enough to tell me. That makes you the bravest hamster of all."
Encouraged, the little creature perked up happily.
Meanwhile, an officer was taking Sunny’s statement, and his expression grew skeptical.
"So you’re saying you discovered a corpse under your bed because a livestreamer who claims to understand animals told you to look?"
Sunny nodded and held up her phone. "Yes, Loren Zoo’s Ms. Nancy. She really can understand them!"
The officer’s face hardened. He looked at the screen and said sternly, "Comrade streamer, we strongly suspect you may be involved in this case. You are required to come to Changning District Precinct to make a formal statement."
Nancy was dumbfounded. "What does this have to do with me? I was just doing an online consultation."
She shrugged. "Besides, Townsville HQ invited me as a special consultant for solving cases, because I can understand animal speech."
The officer’s tone sharpened. "Special consultant for HQ? Young lady, let me remind you—your livestream already has over ten thousand viewers. In this country, spreading false rumors with more than five hundred shares is enough to open a criminal case."
