Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 71: The Bat Signal
"I’m the one who had a friend call it in!"
Stella stood up unsteadily, still clutching her rabbit. "This man... he was hiding in my walk-in closet. He rigged the door lock so I couldn't get out."
Hearing the commotion settle over the phone, Nancy turned to the bat choir. "Alright, tell your friends they can back off now. The police have taken over."
The bats let out a series of high-pitched chirps into the microphone. "Let's head back, boys!"
"This was a perfect operation! Come and visit every once in a while!"
"Thank you, heroes!" Nancy called out. "If you ever need a favor, come find me at the Loren Zoo anytime!"
"Don't worry about it! It was nothing!"
Upon receiving the signal, the swarm retracted their wings in unison, sounding like a hundred blades returning to their sheaths. The massive lead bat kicked off the ground, performing a mid-air flip as its wings unfurled like a heavy black cloak. It cut a silver arc through the moonlight and vanished into the night, leaving nothing behind but a few drifting tufts of fur.
The officers on the scene watched the bats depart with such flair at Nancy’s command, their jaws dropping in unison.
"Holy crap... am I dreaming, or did we just see the real Batman?"
"How... how is that even possible?"
As the two officers cuffed the stalker, the disbelief remained etched on their faces.
Still holding her rabbit, Stella suddenly remembered something crucial. "Nancy, can you ask the bunny something for me? Ask him when this man got in. And how?"
Stella’s penthouse was a high-security fortress designed for maximum privacy. Nancy was just as curious to know how a stalker had managed to breach it.
Stella angled the camera toward the Angora rabbit.
"Hey there, little one," Nancy said, her voice softening. "Are you feeling okay now? Are you hurt anywhere?"
"I'm fine. Thank you miss, I'm fine now." The rabbit spoke with a very adorable voice.
A* how sweet!
Nancy said, "Then can you tell me how did you find out that there is someone in the closet?"
"I love exploring the house when my owner isn't home…"
At the sound of her voice, the previously heroic rabbit suddenly turned shy and fidgety. "And I love pooping in my owner's closet."
It spoke up with an air of total self-assurance. "Besides, the maid would clean up anyway!"
Nancy was speechless. She took back every thought she’d had about this rabbit being perfectly well-behaved. This little guy was a real piece of work.
Rabbits are naturally inclined to use a litter box, but some rebellious ones will occasionally leave "presents" around to claim their domain. Clearly, this rabbit was a rebel.
The Angora rabbit blinked its large, round eyes, recounting the story in a high, innocent voice. "I was just exploring as usual two days ago, and I started to sniff around just to find the perfect spot to poop on."
Nancy couldn't help but think that only a rabbit could make such a crude act sound so dainty and cute.
The rabbit's ears twitched, and its voice began to tremble as the memory caught up to it. "But I smelled a stranger's scent! I followed the scent and found someone hiding in my owner's closet. He was sniffing my owner's underwear! He saw me, smiled at me and wanted to pet my fur. I was scared to death! So, I ran out of the closet, and I never went back in!"
Nancy felt a chill run down her spine. "The stalker was lurking in the apartment since the night before last?" she asked, stunned. "You mean he spent the entire night there?"
The rabbit nodded, its ears quivering with anxiety. "I thought my owner had hired him to catch me because my owner just can't stand my poop, but I found out that the creep started to bathe himself, relieve himself in my owner's house… The scariest part is that he didn't even come out of the closet today… And I saw him polishing the knife while fidgeting with the lock!"
The officer examining the door finished his inspection and chimed in. "The suspect tampered with the lock from the inside. He used a delay mechanism that allowed the victim to open it normally once, but the moment it shut, the latch jammed permanently. It couldn't be opened from either side."
The rabbit shuddered. "It was so scary! I almost wet myself—well, again."
"It’s okay now. You’re safe," Nancy soothed the animal while translating the testimony for Stella and the officers.
Officer Lou, who was in charge of the report, stared at Nancy on the screen as she provided "simultaneous interpretation" for a rabbit. He looked back at the solemn, muttering Angora and began to question his entire career.
"I’m actually taking a statement from a rabbit," he muttered, rubbing his temples. "If this gets out, I’m going to be the laughingstock of the department for the rest of the year."
He looked down at his notebook, where he had written:
"Witness: Angora Rabbit (Male, 1.5 years old) Testimony: The creep didn't just crash at my human's place; he stole her expensive body wash! — Note: Witness became agitated and stomped his foot during this allegation."
Lou’s lip twitched. "Can we even use this as evidence? The judge is going to laugh us out of the courtroom."
"I was so scared I just curled up in the corner of the living room to wait for her, the rabbit continued. I knew that as soon as she got home, she’d go to the dressing room to put her things away and change. So the second she walked through the front door, I lunged and bit her pant leg as hard as I could!"
As the rabbit provided more and more detail—even explaining exactly how the suspect broke the lock—the officer sighed and resigned himself to the task.
"Whatever. It’s fine," he muttered. "It’s not me that’s crazy; it’s the world."
Nancy listened to the rest of the story, but one question remained. "But bunny, how did the stalker get inside in the first place?"
