"That’s actually good," she said carefully. "It protects your cat, and it’s a good deed for the community."

The man shook his head bitterly. "But my daughter resents me for cutting off her boyfriend. Now every mealtime she leaps onto the table, kicks all the dishes to the floor, hisses at me. Sometimes she claws my face or slaps me with her paw."

"Stop!" Jacob cut her off, panicked. "I believe you! Don’t say more."

Nancy smiled and made a small gesture toward the cat. "Chonky, stand up."

At once, the calico shot to her feet in Jacob’s arms.

"Good girl," Nancy soothed. "Don’t worry. I’ll fix this for you today."

The kitten nodded, tail lashing happily. "Thank you, Nancy~"

Jacob gaped. "Why does she listen to you and not me? Who’s the real owner here?"

Just then, a voice came from Jacob’s side. "Breakfast is ready. Will you eat in the dining room this time, or hide in your room again?"

Jacob looked helplessly at Nancy. "Even for meals I have to hide, or my daughter flips everything. It’s humiliating."

Nancy lowered her voice. "Tell Marilyn to bring it in here."

Jacob hesitated.

Nancy’s tone was firm. "Trust me. She won’t knock over your food this time."

A moment later, Marilyn entered with the meal, laying out the dishes while eyeing the calico nervously. "Shouldn’t the cat be taken out first?"

Jacob shook his head. "Chonky’s being good today."

Sure enough, the kitten nestled quietly in his arms, not even glancing at the food on the table.
