Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 323: The Audit
After a marathon of tests, Nancy was shown to the director's office to wait.
A few minutes later, Barry walked in holding a stack of fresh reports. He sat behind his massive desk and leafed through the pages in silence. His brow remained furrowed, his finger tapping occasionally on a specific data point, but he didn't say a word.
The silence was deafening. Nancy was practically breaking into a cold sweat.
She couldn't take the suspense anymore. "So... how do the results look?"
Barry stayed quiet for a moment before looking up at her. His expression was a blank slate. "Go home for now. Wait for the final results."
"You’re trying to kill me, aren't you?" Nancy’s face fell. "Being that vague is a guaranteed way to make sure I don't sleep a wink tonight."
A ghost of a smile touched Barry’s eyes at her sheer terror, but it was quickly replaced by a look of professional gravity. He chose his words carefully, trying to soften the blow. "Your data... it shows some irregularities. You have certain markers that are well outside the normal range, but these outliers seem to have formed a delicate internal balance. For now, they aren't causing any actual functional issues with your body."
The explanation didn't help. If anything, it made Nancy even more confused.
"Outside the normal range? A balance?" Her mind was racing with questions.
"I need a panel of specialists to analyze the specifics," Barry said, closing the file. "I’ll let you know the second we have a conclusion."
Filled with a nagging sense of dread, Nancy left the hospital.
As she got into the car Barry had arranged for her, the driver asked respectfully, "Where to, Miss Nancy?"
Nancy looked down at a message on her phone. "Summers Corp headquarters."
The Summers Corp building had stood in this established Townsville business district for over twenty years. While the exterior showed some signs of age, it still radiated the solid, unshakeable aura of an old-money institution.
Nancy stood at the curb, looking up at the skyscraper she had entered thousands of times before. Her gaze was complicated. She went to the mailroom first to print a thick stack of documents, then turned to the assistant Ginnie had sent to meet her. "Get these onto a cart and bring them to Conference Room One."
Inside the conference room, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Every shareholder, core project member, and a handful of elite consultants flown in from overseas had already arrived. They were all waiting for one person.
The delay bred resentment, and the room was buzzing with low-level grumbling.
"We’re all sitting here waiting for her? That animal communicator really thinks she’s something else now, doesn't she?"
"The group is struggling with cash flow as it is. A five-million-dollar consulting fee is an absolute joke."
"How could you agree to her terms so easily?"
Yvonne, sitting at the head of the long table, finally spoke up. "She has earned the right to make us wait."
The moment Yvonne spoke, the room went quiet. Ginnie, seeing her aunt defend Nancy so openly, felt her smug expression crumble into a scowl.
Just then, the heavy double doors swung open.
Nancy walked in, instantly drawing every eye in the room. She didn't hesitate, her gaze cutting through the crowd to land directly on Yvonne.
Yvonne looked impeccable. Her skin was porcelain smooth, and she wore a perfectly tailored pearl-white suit accented by warm South Sea pearls at her neck and ears. She exuded an air of effortless elegance and power.
Nancy’s fingers tightened as she thought of the suffering her mother endured while fleeing the Summers family's reach, all while this woman sat here reaping the rewards.
When their eyes met, Yvonne beckoned her forward. "Nancy, it’s been a long time. Come, sit by my side."
Nancy walked straight to the empty seat of honor next to Yvonne and sat down. she didn't give the angry shareholders so much as a glance.
The move only fueled their irritation. They had already taken massive losses after the vaccine project was scrapped and Chandler was hauled off to prison. While they didn't dare challenge the powerful Yvonne, the fallen Nancy was an easy target for their frustration.
One of the senior shareholders was the first to strike. "A five-million-dollar fee? Plus a cut of the entire line? Those terms are absurd."
"The group needs capital recovery right now," another chimed in, his voice dripping with contempt. "At those rates, what's left for us? You need to remember your place. You’re a hired consultant now, not the Summers family heiress anymore."
Nancy didn't bother arguing. She stood up, grabbed her stack of files, and turned toward the door. "Fine. I’m leaving."
