Tammy took the phone and gave it a quick look. "It looks like white quartz sand. Why? Are you thinking about putting a tank in the new quarters?"

Nancy did not answer. Instead, she asked a question that made the air in the room suddenly turn cold.

"Is it possible that these white quartz pebbles are mixed with fragments of human teeth? Can you tell?"

Tammy's brow furrowed instantly. She did not ask her daughter why she was asking. Instead, she answered with the professional rigor of a scientist.

"It would be very difficult to tell from a glance. High quality natural white quartz is uniform, with a slight glassy luster and a warm milky or ivory white color."

She paused, looking up at her daughter, her words heavy.

"The texture is extremely similar to human teeth that have been worn down over a period of years."

In the photos, the monstera leaves were so large they looked grotesque, and the ivy vines were growing with a reckless lack of restraint. Every leaf was soaked in a thick, dark green that almost seemed to drip off the screen.

Tammy took one look and her brow deepened into a scowl.

"This is not simple flourishing," her voice dropped. "This is nitrogen overload. Look at that color. It is unnaturally dark, a sickly kind of growth. When leaves become this oversized, the stems and roots cannot actually support them."

She paused, her fingertip tapping the nearly black greenery on the screen.

"It looks like they have been... overfed with something. And if this continues, the root systems will be burned out soon. They will not live long. It looks like far too much fertilizer was added."
