Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 350: The Thumping In The Wall

4 min 1 views

The scammers had been gaslighting Nana for weeks, but their act was finally over.

When Nana heard Simon was a cop, her eyes went wide, and she completely stopped fussing with the cross in her hands.

Faylin’s cousin, Rudolph, saw the ship sinking and immediately switched roles. He jumped up, pointing an accusing finger at the group of scammers to distance himself as fast as possible.

"I knew it! You’re all nothing but frauds! Here I was, sick with worry, just trying to help my Nana, and you snakes were playing me the whole time!"

He turned and grabbed the old woman’s hand, looking like a kicked puppy. "Nana, I was just so worried about you. I let them get in my head... you aren't mad at me, are you?"

Nana looked at her grandson's frantic face and let out a tired sigh. She patted his hand gently. "It’s alright. You were tricked too. I don't blame you."

Rudolph looked like he’d just avoided a death sentence.

Faylin gave Rudolph a cold, sideways glance before leaning in to whisper to Nancy. "I still don’t get it. Why go through all this trouble just to force her to sell the house?"

Nancy gave a knowing smile, her eyes trailing over the dejected scammers. "Don’t worry. Once the police are done interrogating them, the truth will come out. I’ll let you know the second I hear anything."

"I’m counting on you," Faylin said, nodding solemnly.

The Cloudtopia police arrived in record time, thrilled to rack up a coordinated fraud bust. They looked at the siblings like they were rockstars. They had to bring in two vans just to pack up the entire occult team and haul them away.

Once the vans pulled off, the noisy villa finally went quiet. The lead officer was shaking hands with Simon and Nancy, getting ready to head out.

That’s when Chunk, who had just woken up in his travel crate, poked his furry little head through the door.

"Are the bad guys gone yet?"

Nancy looked at the sleepy bat and nodded. "Yeah, they’re all gone. Just a bunch of fakes."

Chunk tilted his head, his big ears twitching like tiny radar dishes.

"But... I still hear it. That tapping sound. Something is hitting the wall. It’s the exact same ghost sound the old lady was talking about!"

Nancy’s expression sharpened. Bats have some of the best hearing in the animal kingdom; they catch frequencies humans can't even dream of.

She lowered her voice, looking at Simon and the officer. "Chunk says he still hears the thumping."

Simon understood immediately. He knelt down and spoke softly to the bat. "Chunk, can you help us find where it’s coming from?"

Chunk puffed out his tiny chest, suddenly all business. "On it! My ears are top-of-the-line!"

Nancy didn't want the bat flying around and giving Nana a heart attack, so she asked Faylin to take the old woman to the tea room for a rest. Once they were gone, Chunk zipped out of his crate.

He circled the high-ceilinged lobby once before hovering precisely next to the old brick fireplace. He hooked his claws into the mortar, pressing his head against the chimney.

"Right here! It’s coming from inside! There’s an empty room next door sharing this wall. If you put your ear to that side, you’ll hear it way better!"

The three of them followed Chunk upstairs to the room he pointed out. It was an old, dusty study that smelled like aged paper and wood. The room was deathly quiet. Nancy followed the bat's lead and pressed her ear against the cold wall.

Tap... tap... tap...

There it was. A faint, rhythmic knocking. It was subtle, the kind of sound you could only catch in total silence. In a hollow, century-old house like this, the sound felt like it was tapping directly on her nerves. It was chilling.

"What... what are you all doing?"

The old woman’s frail voice came from right behind them. Nancy jumped, nearly hitting the ceiling. The old woman was like a ghost herself, moving without making a sound.

Faylin was right behind her, supporting her arm. She looked at the three people glued to the wall in confusion. "Nancy, did you find something?"

Before Nancy could answer, the faint sound echoed through the quiet study, reaching Faylin’s ears too.

Faylin’s face went white. "That’s it! That’s the sound Nana hears at night!"

She looked at the wall, terrified. "But those scammers are gone. Why is the ghost still here?"
