Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 467: The Turning Tide
Harmony flew back and dropped the remote in front of the police. "Heh! I am just as good as a human officer, am I not?"
Nancy leaned over to gently pat Snowball’s cold little head before looking up to give the two magnificent Gyrfalcons a thumbs up. "I really could not have done it without you guys!"
Antonio and his team finally snapped out of the shock of that lightning fast, seamless animal strike.
"What are we waiting for?" Antonio shouted, stifling a grin. "Fish them out! We cannot let our big scientist actually turn into a popsicle!"
The police inflatable boats were launched immediately. Like fishermen pulling in a net, they dragged Langstrom and his three accomplices out of the freezing mud. Their lips were purple from the cold as they were hauled ashore, handcuffed, and fully neutralized.
Langstrom dripped with mud, his face as gray and lifeless as a rotting leaf. As he was led past Nancy, he stopped abruptly. He lifted his bloodshot eyes and glared at her.
"Heh... heh..."
He let out a series of cold laughs. "Nancy, I never expected that after all my planning, I would still lose to you. The world is not fair. If only I had your gift for communicating with animals..."
Nancy met his venomous gaze calmly. Her voice was clear, carrying across the swamp as the wind finally died down.
"You are wrong, Langstrom. You did not lose because you cannot talk to animals. Animals are my comrades and my friends. They were never tools to be driven at will. You used their fear, violated their instincts, and forced them to steal and rob for you. That was a gamble against nature itself. How can someone swimming against the current ever defeat the overwhelming tide?"
Nancy turned slightly, her gaze sweeping over the police, the military guards, and her Oroqen kin. She looked further toward the research and logistics teams representing the will of the nation.
"The force standing behind me has never been just me and my animal friends. It is the law, the strength, and the wisdom of an entire country. It is countless people standing for justice, and countless researchers striving for excellence in their fields to protect the peace of this land."
She looked back at Langstrom, her eyes as sharp as a blade.
"To guard against me, you created a repellent, thinking it would erase all your traces. But you forgot that your repellent itself became the most obvious biological signpost. I do not understand complex molecular formulas, but…"
Nancy’s eyes lit up like stars. She did not understand them, but her mother did.
"There is always someone better. And that person took only three hours to create a tracking agent that locked onto you."
Langstrom’s pupils shrank. The last shred of his composure shattered completely. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
Nancy turned away, walking toward the heavily guarded silver case. The storm had stopped. A sliver of light pierced through the clouds, illuminating her steady silhouette.
The dust had settled, and the main force began to withdraw. True protection was never the legend of a single person. It was a flood of people, a nation, and thousands of living beings writing an unstoppable history together.
After dealing with Langstrom, Nancy did not forget the animals he had manipulated. She brought the decoy fox and the other creatures affected by the drugs back to the temporary base.
In a quiet laboratory, Tammy and Nancy worked side by side. They carefully checked each animal’s condition. Tammy mixed a gentle sedative while Nancy spoke softly to comfort the little creatures as they were fed. Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a glow on their focused faces. The atmosphere was one of quiet understanding.
Once she confirmed all the animals were stable and asleep, Tammy took off her gloves and turned to face Nancy.
"Nancy," she began, her voice steady and calm as usual, but carrying a touch of solemnity. "On behalf of the entire Elpis research team, thank you. Everyone will be able to go home for a proper New Year now."
Nancy blinked in surprise.
"This case of core reagents represents nearly half a year of hard work and countless failures for the whole team." Tammy’s gaze fell on the silver box before returning to Nancy’s face. "If it had been destroyed here, critical data would have been lost forever, and the project would have been set back by at least a year."
She paused, a faint sense of relief showing in her expression. "If that had happened, everyone on the team would likely have been stuck in the lab through this New Year and the next, struggling with broken data."
"So that was it..."
A complex wave of warmth washed over Nancy’s heart.
