Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 487: A Path of Shadows
"Because they could never fully verify the claims, yet could not entirely rule out the suspicion, the organization made a decision. For the sake of overall security and his own protection, they eventually decided to have James step back to a secondary role."
Nancy’s hand trembled as she held the receiver. She had heard from her brother that their father had transitioned from an elite Marine to a criminal investigator. For a man that loyal and talented to be forced away from the front lines, his career cut short and his reputation left in tatters. It was more than just a tragedy. It was an outrage.
Who was responsible for this slander? Could the Summers family’s reach truly extend into such core operations? Or was this a masterpiece of deception by Golden Rod, a classic play to move the most threatening sniper off the battlefield?
A chilling realization struck her. "And my brother... he was so exceptional in university. But when he graduated, he was assigned to such a remote, low level post. Was that also because of this?"
She did not finish the sentence, but the cold implication hung in the air.
Captain Simmons sighed heavily. "I asked an old friend to look into Simon’s assignment privately. Around the time of his graduation, his file was flooded with anonymous reports. They focused on three points. First, they claimed his family background was too complex for core affairs. Second, they slandered his personal conduct and political views. Both were found to be baseless. Third, they suggested his father’s death might have caused psychological instability, making him unfit for high pressure, front line work."
Simmons paused. "In that atmosphere, with constant reports coming in, the organization chose the safe route. They made a protective arrangement and sent him to a remote post for observation. In plain terms, those reports successfully sabotaged his future without ever needing a shred of evidence."
Nancy felt a wave of icy fury. "You mentioned the Summers family was involved. What was their specific role in my father’s death and Simon’s career setbacks?"
"After Anders was taken in by National Security, the investigation team obtained key information," Simmons explained. "Through their vast commercial intelligence network, the Summers family accidentally learned of Golden Rod’s plan to retaliate against James and his family. They did not act directly. Instead, they took a more subtle approach. Using their influence, they stepped in at critical moments to testify under the guise of objective feedback that Simon’s background made him unsuitable for core positions. This amplified the organization’s concerns and sealed the decision to send him away."
Nancy thought of Anders, the youngest son of the Summers family and president of Neo Summers Corp Entertainment, who had been so arrogant at the restaurant before being hauled away. She had not expected that confrontation to actually crack open the case.
Her breathing quickened, her voice a mix of excitement and repressed hatred. "Can we convict the members of the Summers family now?"
"We have arrested Anders, but the chain of evidence does not yet extend to the rest of the family," Simmons said. "In short, they learned of Golden Rod’s plan and chose to let the knife do the work for them."
Then, his tone shifted. It became lower and even more solemn. "If we want to prove whether there is actual collusion between the Summers family and Golden Rod, and if we want to clear your father’s name once and for all... there is an opportunity."
He stopped for a second to let the weight of his words settle. "But this path is extremely dangerous."
Nancy did not hesitate. Her voice was calm but resolute. "I am not afraid of danger."
A cold light gathered in her eyes as she spoke each word with precision. "The filth hiding in the shadows must pay. My father’s blood will not have been spilled in vain. His name must be cleared. He lived with honor, and he deserves to rest in glory, not be defiled by this human scum."
Simmons felt a surge of respect for her. After a moment of silence, he continued. "The former leader of Golden Rod had an adopted son named Roland. He has since taken over and is even more ruthless than his predecessor. He poses a severe threat to our southwestern border. Many of our narcotics officers have already died at his hands."
His voice took on a lethal edge. "The highest levels have decided to launch a special operation to uproot this cancer once and for all. Now, a critical window has opened. We have an undercover operative who has successfully embedded himself with Roland. He holds massive amounts of evidence and intelligence on their hideouts."
