Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 210: The Poisoned Well

4 min 1 views

Nancy's eyes snapped up, sharp and alert. "Could this be intentional poisoning?"

There was no time to track down a culprit now; saving a life was the only priority. Even though the specific toxin remained a mystery, they sprang into action immediately.

Nancy hung an IV bag and started a rapid infusion to combat the crane's severe dehydration. Simultaneously, Commissioner Quinton administered injections to protect the liver and kidneys, fighting to shield the crane's failing organs.

Finally, they hooked her up to oxygen and a life monitor to stabilize her erratic heartbeat and breathing. The female crane's condition held—for now.

Commissioner Quinton looked at the frail bird, his voice tight. "We need to identify the exact chemical components of this toxin to provide the right antidote."

"I have to send the blood samples to a higher-level rescue center, but that could take hours. I don't know if she can hold on that long..." He began frantically packing the samples and organizing the clinical report.

Toxin...

A flash of inspiration struck Nancy. She looked up abruptly. "There's a place that can detect the toxin components much faster, and it's much closer to us!"

Before Quinton could even ask, Nancy was already dialing her brother, Simon.

"Does the police department have a toxicology unit available right now?" She asked, her words tumbling out as she briefed him on the poisoned crane.

On the other hand, Simon didn't hesitate for a second. He immediately provided a delivery address and the name of a contact person.

Nancy had the phone on speaker. Quinton scribbled down the details while listening and declared, "I'll deliver the samples personally!"

Nancy nodded, her expression grim. "Commissioner, I'm counting on you for the testing." She paused, her voice dropping an octave. "I need to find out exactly where this poison came from."

Wiping a bead of cold sweat from her forehead, Nancy took a deep breath and turned toward the male crane waiting in the holding area.

"I need to ask her mate what they've eaten recently. More than likely, this happened early this morning or late last night."

Nancy realized one crucial detail: the male crane was perfectly healthy while the female was dying. This meant she had touched something he hadn't, or gone somewhere he hadn't followed.

She approached the male crane, softening her voice. "Think carefully. Did your mate eat anything alone recently? Or did she go anywhere without you?"

The crane tilted his head, his dark eyes blinking as he strained to remember.

"We usually forage together... I'm the one who catches the fish to feed her..." Suddenly, he stiffened, his chirps becoming rapid and anxious.

"Wait! This morning, she said she was thirsty. We were passing a village, and she drank some water from a stone basin next to a well."

"I wasn't thirsty, so I didn't drink..." His wings trembled as the realization hit him. "Could... could the water be the problem?"

A chill raced up Nancy's spine, leaving her skin crawling.

Poison in a well.

If that well wasn't abandoned—if it was a primary source of water for a village—then an entire community was in mortal danger.

Cranes are highly intelligent creatures. The male crane's voice turned frantic and terrified as he followed the logic. "If the well is poisoned, does that mean everyone who draws water from it will be poisoned too?!"

He flapped his wings restlessly, spooked by his own conclusion. "When we flew away, I saw two or three villagers pulling water from that very well!"

It was the worst-case scenario.

Nancy suppressed her panic and pressed for details. "Do you remember where that village is? Can you find it again?"

The male crane nodded without hesitation, his voice firm. "I remember! I can lead you there!"

The stakes were now astronomical. Nancy dialed Simon again, her voice shaking with tension.

"We have a major crisis! A village well has likely been poisoned, and the villagers are already using the water!"

Simon's internal alarms went off instantly. "I'm mobilizing a team to take samples immediately! Which village is it?"

Nancy looked at the crane beside her and made a split-second decision. "I'm going to put a GPS tracker on him and let him lead the way. Follow the signal!"

She quickly requested a lightweight GPS tracking ring from the rescue station staff—the kind used to monitor wildlife after release. She carefully secured the ring to the male crane's leg and patted his wing.

"I'm counting on you. Take us there."

The male crane unfurled his snow-white wings and launched into the sky like a streak of cold light, vanishing into the distance.
