Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 156: A Friend In Need
Among the staff members Nancy had met, an older man named Jeff had specifically told her to reach out if she ever needed help.
Nancy turned to Autumn immediately. "Take care of Magenta for a moment. I have to make an emergency call."
"Magenta" was the name of the ailing red panda.
Autumn nodded fervently. At this moment, all her hope was pinned on Miss Nancy, who seemed capable of anything. After all, within less than a month of her arrival, Miss Nancy had single-handedly pulled Loren Zoo back from the brink of bankruptcy!
Nancy took a deep breath and dialed Jeff's number, her heart pounding with anxiety.
To her immense relief, the call was picked up almost instantly.
Before Nancy could even speak, Jeff's enthusiastic and urgent voice came through the line, delivering news that left her stunned:
"Oh! Miss Nancy! What a coincidence! I was just thinking that I absolutely had to call you today!"
"Has the General Administration of Sport notified you yet?"
Nancy was completely bewildered. "Notified? Notified me of what?"
Jeff's tone was brimming with excitement. "The swim team took two gold medals in one go at the World Championships last night!"
"The head coach said it's all thanks to you. He called our Gabriel office in the middle of the night!"
"He's strongly requested that we provide your zoo with a professional veterinary team. He wants to ensure the health of those 'animal coaches' is guaranteed during their training period!"
A team! Of veterinarians! Provided for her!
These words exploded in Nancy's mind like fireworks. She was instantly overjoyed. "That's amazing! Senior Jeff, can this veterinary team be in place today?"
Jeff's tone turned hesitant. "Uh, about that... I'm afraid it won't be that fast."
"Because these are officially budgeted positions, we have to follow protocol. We need to screen resumes, organize written tests and interviews..."
"Since I've worked with you before, the department specifically put me in charge of coordinating this. I was actually hoping to discuss the size and specific requirements of this team with you."
Only then did Jeff realize he still didn't know why Nancy had called him first!
"By the way, Miss Nancy, why were you looking for a veterinary team so urgently? Has something happened?"
Nancy quickly explained the emergency with Magenta and how one of her lead vets had been maliciously poached. "A major surgery like an intussusception is safest with multiple people. Right now, I'm desperately short of an anesthesiologist!"
"That is absolutely despicable!"
Jeff was indignant. "Holding her accountable is a matter for the labor department, and we can't interfere with that. But as for the manpower issue, we can definitely solve that immediately!"
"Hang tight! I'm going to call some people for you right now!" Jeff said decisively. "I'll have a veterinarian contact you directly, alright?"
"Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes!" Nancy felt like she was about to cry tears of joy. This was truly help arriving at the perfect moment.
Nancy hurried back to the infirmary. Seeing Autumn still by the bedside, carefully tending to the pained Magenta, her heart warmed.
"Hold on a little longer. A vet is coming to support us soon. For now, let's do our best to ease Magenta's pain."
Autumn's eyes welled up instantly. She gently stroked Magenta's soft fur, her voice choked but hopeful. "Be a good girl, Magenta." Just endure it a bit longer, the pain will go away soon."
The red panda seemed to understand the comfort. She weakly blinked her large, moist eyes and nuzzled Autumn's palm with her furry cheek, letting out a tiny whimper. She looked both pitiful and incredibly sweet.
Nancy knelt down and said softly, "Come, let me teach you how to relieve pain for a little one this size."
She began to demonstrate a unique massage technique she had developed over the years, her fingers moving in gentle, precise circles over the red panda's abdomen.
"Thank you, Autumn," Nancy said quietly as she rubbed Magenta's belly. "Thank you for not being poached at the last minute and choosing to stay by my side."
Autumn's cheeks flushed a deep red. She whispered sheepishly, "Actually... Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital contacted me, too. They offered double my salary and promised to pay my contract's breach-of-contract fee..."
Nancy wasn't surprised by this, but she was curious about something else. "Then why didn't you accept?"
Autumn scratched her head awkwardly. "To be honest, I was very tempted! It's Summers Corp, after all!"
"But then I thought about it," she continued. "Summers Corp is the top animal hospital in the country. I've seen their hiring requirements. You have to graduate from a top-tier veterinary school just to be an intern. Their social recruitment is only for senior vets or those returning from overseas studies."
"An assistant like me, who graduated from an ordinary school and has only worked for a year and a half... if I went there, I'd probably be crushed by the competition. And I'd probably be isolated, too."
