Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 158: The "Justice" Blogger
The anonymous email claimed that Magenta, a red panda at Loren Zoo, was suffering from acute gastrointestinal distress. It alleged that the zoo, short-staffed and unwilling to spend money on professional help, was delaying the surgery. Instead, they had simply removed Magenta from the enclosure and stashed her in the infirmary.
The email included a video of Magenta falling ill in her habitat; her pained cries were enough to break anyone's heart.
As a blogger who took "protecting animal rights" as his personal mission, Fawks loathed nothing more than the mistreatment of animals.
His face turned ashen as he pointed his camera toward the empty habitat. His voice was heavy with grim conviction. "...As you can all see, Magenta is indeed not here."
His livestream was currently active. His followers, having seen his earlier teasers, knew he was on a specific mission today to verify Magenta's safety. Seeing the empty enclosure caused an immediate wave of anxiety.
The live chat erupted:
"Loren Zoo again?! Didn't they just have that scandal with the keeper being rough with the animals?"
"That was debunked! It was maliciously edited fake news. It takes forever for the truth to catch up. I'm staying neutral for now; maybe there's a misunderstanding..."
"Stop waiting! Go to the infirmary! What if something has happened to Magenta?"
"The host even paid fifty bucks for a ticket just to check on her... so much respect. Sending a donation for your hard work!"
"I wouldn't spend a single cent on such a black-hearted zoo."
The back of the Loren Zoo ticket featured a mini-map. Fawks scanned it and immediately began power-walking toward the infirmary.
His tone grew increasingly solemn. "I'm going to see for myself exactly how they are 'treating' Magenta!"
As he walked, he pulled up the zoo's official website on his phone to show the viewers. His voice trembled with suppressed rage. "Look closely, everyone. This is their officially listed veterinary staff."
"Only one attending veterinarian and one assistant!"
Fawks took a deep breath, practically spitting out his next words. "And, according to an inside source I've reached, that one and only attending vet has recently resigned!"
"In other words, there might only be a single veterinary assistant left in this entire zoo trying to hold things together!"
This sparked a firestorm in the chat:
"What?! Only an assistant? What can they even do? Treat a scrape or a cold at most!"
"My god! Hasn't Loren Zoo made a lot of money lately? They can't afford a real vet?!"
"What do they think animals are?" Cash cows? They won't even treat them when they're sick!"
"Hurry, host! Magenta can't die!"
Among his followers were genuine animal lovers, and some who had actually visited the zoo tried to speak up:
"Actually, Miss Nancy herself is a vet! I live nearby and have a yearly pass. Ever since the new Director took over, the animals look so much better. I think she's very capable and caring."
"+1. I saw the video of Miss Nancy giving the alpaca a shot. She was so gentle and patient!"
"Host, I've followed you for a long time, but I'm staying neutral this time. Let's wait for the facts."
However, these rational voices were instantly drowned out by fierce backlash:
"Oh, how convenient—shills appearing out of nowhere? The zoo has money for a PR water army but no money for a vet?"
"How can you still defend them? The lead vet ran away; what use is a Director?"
"Unbelievable. The red panda is dying and you're still praising the Director?"
Fawks frowned as he saw the few "discordant" comments. He was used to a chat full of "warriors of justice" praising him as a guardian of animals. These small doubts felt like nails on a chalkboard to him.
He addressed the camera, his tone noticeably displeased. "Rational? Isn't searching for the truth exactly what I'm doing right now?"
"When have I said anything to 'ruin' Loren Zoo's name?"
By then, Fawks had reached the vicinity of the infirmary. Before he could even get close, sharp, high-pitched whimpers of obvious agony drifted from the building.
It was the helpless sound of a red panda in severe abdominal pain, and each cry tugged at the heartstrings.
Fawks immediately aimed his lens through the transparent glass of the infirmary.
On the screen, Nancy and Autumn were seen kneeling on either side of the red panda, using their bare hands to gently rub its belly.
Seeing this, Fawks's anger was fully ignited. He practically growled into his microphone, "They're just... watching her?!"
"She's clearly in this much pain, and instead of contacting a major hospital with proper equipment, they're just sitting there doing a useless massage?!"
