The military intelligence network wouldn't have missed something this big, and they certainly wouldn't have recommended the desert resort if it was a graveyard.

Just then, the Raventown police cruisers arrived with their sirens cutting through the desert silence. The lead officer stepped out and immediately recognized Nancy and Simon, offering a quick salute.

"Nancy, Officer Simon. I didn't expect to see you two out here."

He gave them a quick rundown of their initial findings. "As soon as the call came in, we ran a check on every hotel and guesthouse in the resort area. No one has reported any missing persons lately."

Nancy felt a surge of doubt. That made no sense.

The scene became a hive of activity. Technicians swarmed the pit, taking photos and bagging evidence from every angle. After a quick look, the forensic investigator stood up.

"We need to get these back to the lab at headquarters. We can't safely remove these wrappings out here in the sand. We'll need a controlled environment for facial reconstruction and identification."

The commanding officer turned to Nancy and Simon. "Thanks for the help. We will take it from here. You two should head to the hotel and get some rest."

As the police finished their notes, the producer pushed his way back to the front. "Officer, what about the site? Can we keep filming?"

The lead officer shook his head. "The area is a crime scene. It is locked down. Our team needs to do a grid search for any physical evidence left behind."

"But what are we supposed to do?" The producer's face fell. "Officer, every day we are shut down out here costs us six figures. The location, the gear, feeding hundreds of people... the investors are already complaining about the budget. If we stall now, they will pull the plug!"

One of the officers shrugged. "The desert is huge. Can't you just find another spot like this?"

"It is not that easy!" The producer pointed toward the distant ruins and dunes. "Look at this place. We need that specific background with the abandoned watchtower and the smooth lines of the dunes. This spot has hard ground for the camera tracks to keep the shots steady. Plus, it is close to the highway for supplies. You don't just stumble onto a perfect setup like this."

The officer scratched his head. "I get it, but we can't clear a crime scene for a movie. You will have to talk to your backers."

The producer knew the police were right. They were not in the business of finding movie sets. He waved them off with a weak smile and apologized for getting in the way.

A cloud of gloom settled over the crew. The director, Ramsay, was already on his phone, frantically calling local guides and fixers. Every response was the same and there was nothing they could do.

He hung up and looked defeated. He turned to his production staff and shouted, "Spread the word! Anyone who can find us a replacement site gets a thirty thousand dollar finders fee!"

That was the magic word.

The second the offer left Ramsay's mouth, a black shadow streaked through the air. Master Crow performed a mid air brake and hovered right in front of the director, letting out a series of flattering caws.

"Look at me! Let me try! I will find it!"

Nancy came running up, breathless. She was not fast enough to grab the greedy little bird. She gave the director an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that. He is mine."

"He probably just thinks you look like a nice guy. He is very friendly."

Ramsay stared at the crow, looking impressed. "That is a very sharp looking bird. I have never seen anyone keep a crow as a pet before."

Nancy took the opening. "Ramsay, about the location... I might be able to help."

"Master Crow really does understand people. He is a professional."

"Wait..." Ramsay tapped his forehead as if a lightbulb had just gone off. "Nancy! You are Nancy from the Loren Zoo! The animal communicator! I knew you looked familiar!" He pulled out a business card and handed it over. "I am Ramsay Donovan. Please, I really need your help. We literally cannot afford to waste another day."

Nancy got back in the SUV and did a quick search for Ramsay's name. He was a powerhouse director with several massive hits under his belt.

She started doing some mental math. Making a connection with a big shot director could be huge. Her zoo was full of little divas who spent their downtime watching dramas on tablets and showing off for tourists. Maybe she could snag them a few acting roles?
