The guard pointed toward several scuffed areas on the ice nearby. "Do you see those? The rescue efforts at this crime scene have practically formed their own predictable paths."

Simon had already found a long pole and was preparing to stage a rescue.

Beside them, the guard added in a low, somber voice, "Just a heads up, saving him is a waste of time. This little idiot has a special talent. You can drag him back to shore out of the goodness of your heart, but he will not run back to the forest full of gratitude. He will freeze for a few seconds, and then, with absolute determination, he will charge right back onto the ice without looking back!"

The guard covered his face with his hands, his voice muffled by his fingers and thick with a mix of grief and frustration.

"He just has to go back and investigate what exactly tripped him up! And then he gets tripped up all over again!"

Nancy could not help but laugh as she listened to the guard.

Roe deer were effectively the stubborn bystanders of the animal kingdom.

When other animals encountered something strange, they bolted. These creatures, however, would slam on the brakes with curiosity written all over their faces. They would not budge until they understood the spectacle.

Even better, their memory of inherent danger was practically non-existent.

Other animals learned their lesson after falling into a trap once, but a roe deer would return to review the situation over and over again. They truly lived out the philosophy of staying exactly where they fell.

By now, Simon and the guard were working together to rescue the deer.

Using the pole to carefully hook under the deer's armpits, and with Nancy guiding from the shore, they finally managed to drag the silly creature back to solid ground.

As soon as its four hooves touched firm earth, the deer instantly came back to life!

It shook the ice shards from its coat. Instead of fear, a strong sense of curiosity burned in its big, innocent eyes.

The deer kicked off with its hind legs, preparing to charge back toward the ice that had caused it such embarrassment. It was already shouting in its own way, "Do not stop me! I have to see what happened just now!"

"How did I suddenly end up facedown on all fours? This is not right!"

Simon was quick. The moment the deer tried to bolt, he extended his long arms and pulled the large, furry creature into a firm embrace.

The deer struggled in his arms, its slender legs flailing in the air. "Hey! Let me go! That shiny flat ground bullied me just now. I have to go ask why it grabbed my feet!"

Watching her brother awkwardly holding the stubborn deer, Nancy burst into a giggle.

She stepped forward and gently patted the deer's damp forehead. "Hey there, little dummy. Do not worry about the ice for a second. There is something even more amazing. Do you want to see?"

"What is that? Could it be more amazing than me falling flat on my face?"

The deer temporarily stopped struggling and tilted its head, half doubting.

Nancy mysteriously pulled out her phone and tapped the screen. "Look. This shiny little square can trap your image inside exactly as it is! It is much more impressive than the ice!"

She quickly switched to the front facing camera and pointed it at the deer.

The screen immediately showed the deer's large face, filled with confusion and wonder.

"Aaah! What is this! Who is this handsome deer in there!"

The deer was instantly captivated. Its eyes went wide, and its nose almost touched the screen. "Why does he look exactly like me? Does he fall down too?"

With its attention diverted by Nancy, the deer had already forgotten its plan to demand an explanation from the ice.

Its two dark, beady eyes were fixed on Nancy’s phone. It listened intently to her, afraid of missing out on some interesting gossip.

Watching Nancy tame the single minded deer with just a few words, the tension at the corners of Simon’s mouth eased into a slight smile. He resigned himself to playing the role of the deer's exclusive security guard.

Truth be told, the big fellow was quite warm to hold.

With the crisis averted, the air was filled with a sense of lighthearted silliness.

Looking at the deer, who had gradually let down its guard and was now curiously sniffing her fingertips with its wet nose, Nancy had a thought. She asked the question that had been bothering her.

"Little guy, all the other animals have been staying far away these past few days. Why did you come here to play on the ice?"

The key storage warehouse for the reagent theft case was right near the biological laboratory.

The repellent Langstrom had developed must have been heavily applied in this area.

Yet this deer had managed to barge in despite the effects?

When she asked, the deer's eyes immediately filled with a strong sense of agreement. It nodded its head vigorously. "Yes, yes, yes! You noticed it too?"

"It has been so weird here lately. There is always this... this strange smell that makes my nose itchy and my heart flutter!"
