Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 69: The Bat Legion
Upon receiving the message, Nancy immediately forwarded the address to Simon, providing a concise summary of the danger Stella was facing.
"Get there now! It’s a life-or-death emergency!"
Simon replied almost instantly. "We’re dispatching the nearest officers right now. Stay in contact with her!"
Nancy let out a small sigh of relief at Simon’s response and quickly moved to reassure Stella.
"Don't be afraid. I’ve already called the police."
Nancy noticed through the video feed that Stella was still in the living room with her rabbit.
"The police are on their way!" she urged. "Look around quickly—is there anything you can use as a weapon?"
Stella gripped the rabbit tighter, her eyes darting frantically around the room. Her expression shifted from fear to sheer desperation.
"There’s no furniture!"
"The living room is empty. I use this whole space as my dance studio."
Through the video call, Nancy could see that the room was indeed barren. With its hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows, it looked exactly like a rehearsal space for an idol group. The only items in sight were two large black speakers in the corner, far too heavy for someone of Stella’s stature to move.
Worst of all, the man hiding in the dressing room was likely listening to every sound coming from the living room at this very moment.
In an emergency like this, dispatch would alert the nearest station or patrolling officers, but even in the best-case scenario, it would take at least fifteen minutes for the police to arrive.
The intruder was only a few dozen paces away from Stella.
Nancy’s throat went dry with anxiety. She wished she could reach through the screen, bringing a tiger from the zoo along with her to crawl through the network and protect her friend.
She forced herself to stay calm. She had to think. Besides calling the police, what else could she do?
Her greatest strength was her ability to communicate with animals.
Nancy’s eyes lit up. Perhaps she could send Stella some animal reinforcements?
"Look out your window. Are there any birds or other small animals nearby?"
The Angora rabbit Stella was holding was gentle and docile; its combat capability was practically zero. Moreover, its long mane often blocked its vision, making it little more than a fluffy, blind companion. A bird’s beak would be a much more effective weapon.
Stella glanced toward the window. Outside, it was pitch black.
"I’m on a high floor. Birds rarely come up this high. There are only bats circling in the air... Can you even talk to bats? They’re too far away anyway, and my phone’s volume is too low..."
Bats!
Nancy’s eyes widened in surprise and excitement.
She leaned in and whispered to the Squirrel Bros, "Quick! Go find the siblings of that chubby little bat!"
The two squirrels, sensing the urgency, dashed out of the infirmary to gather reinforcements.
Meanwhile, Nancy continued messaging Stella. "You have speakers in the living room, right? Can you connect to them?"
Stella nodded. "I can, but the Bluetooth pairing alert is loud. It’ll alert whoever is in the dressing room."
Nancy replied, "Wait for my OK gesture. When I give the signal, connect the Bluetooth."
"Now, go to the window and open it."
Stella bit her lip and nodded. She moved stealthily, creeping toward the window.
The Squirrel Bros returned shortly with five bats in tow. The bats hung upside down from the infirmary doorframe, their small eyes fixed on Nancy.
Nancy quickly muted her microphone.
She turned to the five bats and lowered her voice. "The girl in this video has an intruder in her home. It’s an emergency!"
The lead bat dove down and landed in front of her, the movement of its wings creating a faint breeze. "What do you want us to do?"
"There are others of your kind circling near her home."
Nancy connected the livestream speakers to her phone. "I need you to use your ultrasonic calls to summon every bat you can reach."
Her nails dug into her palms as she added, "Just hold him back when he shows himself."
"The police are already on their way!"
The five bats flapped their wings in unison. "On it!"
The chubby little bat puffed out its round belly and shook its chest with pride. "I am known to have the highest pitch here! My voice will amaze anyone!"
"Wonderful. I’m counting on you!"
Nancy gave Stella the "OK" gesture and unmuted her microphone.
Stella initiated the Bluetooth connection. The mechanical female voice announcing "Bluetooth connected" echoed sharply through the empty, open-concept apartment.
The sound sent a chill down the spines of both women.
Immediately, the bat choir began emitting high-frequency waves: "Screech! Chirp!"
By then, Stella had already slid the window open, allowing the bats' cries to blast through the speakers and out into the night.
She clutched her rabbit, her eyes glued to the hallway leading to the dressing room.
Stella had been stopped by the rabbit biting her clothes the moment she walked in, so she hadn't even entered that part of the apartment yet.
The living room lights were on, but the hallway was a void of darkness. It was impossible to tell if someone was crouching at the far end of the corridor.
The atmosphere in the apartment was suffocating. Aside from the screeching of the bats through the speakers, the silence was absolute.
