Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 289: The Vultures

Nancy beamed. "That’s great news!"

She quickly passed the word to Penny, who was picking at a bowl of cat food. "Penny, your owner is out of danger. He’s going to be fine."

Penny had been too worried to eat, but the second he heard the news, he buried his face in the bowl and started inhaling his meal.

"Perfect! I need to finish every bite so I’m strong enough to go see my human!"

"Penny, once you're done, can you help me find the Tabby King?" Nancy asked, using a wipe to clean the cat's chin. "I need to get him so we can head out."

As always, the fastest way to find a cat was to send another cat. Penny let out a few sharp meows, and a second later, a striped blur streaked out from the garden rocks and landed at Nancy’s feet.

Nancy scratched the Tabby King under the chin. "Your Majesty, we're done here. Let's go."

The Tabby King’s eyes widened. "You caught the killer already?"

"Yeah. I ran into a very nosy parrot at the pet shop. He saw everything."

The Tabby King tilted his head. "I spent my time talking to the rats here at the estate. I didn't get anything on the poisoning, but I heard plenty of other dirt."

"Oh? You've got more?" Nancy poked his head. "What did you hear?"

The Tabby King lowered his voice. "The oldest rat family in the walls says Owen’s kids are a nightmare. None of them are any good."

Penny, listening in, looked confused. "What do you mean any good?"

"It means they're trouble, you sheltered house-cat," the Tabby King muttered. "The rats say the kids rarely visit Owen. When they do show up, it’s only to ask for money or do something shady."

Nancy’s curiosity piqued. "What kind of shady?"

The Tabby King started listing the intel.

"Grayson, the oldest son, sold off a piece of land in the north to his brother-in-law for cheap last month, then wrote it off as a business loss."

Embezzlement, Nancy thought.

"The second daughter, Renee, swapped the most expensive painting in Owen's collection for a fake. She gave the real one to her father-in-law."

Nancy’s eyes went wide.

"And Susan, the youngest, is the worst. While Owen was in surgery last night, she was in the garden with her husband planning to sell off company assets to some shell company overseas. They’ve already got the contracts ready."

Nancy whistled. These weren't just ungrateful kids; they were actively gutting the man's life's work while he was unconscious.

Penny was frantic. "Those little brats! Doing all this behind my human's back!" He pawed at Nancy's leg. "You have to tell him! He can't stay in the dark!"

Nancy agreed. Especially the bit about Susan selling off assets. If the contracts were ready, she was likely planning to move while Owen was still in the hospital.

"We're going to the hospital right now," Nancy decided.

"I'm coming too!" Penny insisted. "I haven't seen my human all day. I miss him!"

Ben, the butler, was now treating Nancy with total respect. When she asked to bring Penny to the hospital, he immediately arranged a luxury van and staff to look after the cats.

On the way, Ben turned to her. "Mr. Owen woke up recently. He specifically asked to meet the detective who saved him so he can thank you himself."

"I have some serious news for him," Nancy said. "It concerns his company. Do you think he can handle the stress right now?"

Ben thought for a moment. "You can tell him. Mr. Owen has a strong heart. He’s been in business for forty years; he’s seen everything. He even kept his cool after finding out Johan was the one who poisoned him. He'll handle this."

Nancy figured he was right. If the man could handle his own son trying to kill him, the rest of this mess probably wouldn't finish him off.

The van pulled up to the hospital entrance.
