"As far as I know, Townsville HQ only appointed one case-solving expert—Professor Jack, the criminologist."

Nancy was about to respond when a firm middle-aged voice sounded from the hall. "That’s right. And now they’ve added another—our special consultant in animal speech."

Nancy looked up in surprise. It was Mr. Samson, the captain of Townsville HQ’s criminal investigation team. He entered her hospital room with several officers, carrying a basket of fruit and milk as gifts.

"Mr. Samson! What brings you here?" Nancy was both delighted and puzzled. Was there another case?

On the livestream screen, the precinct officer froze at the familiar voice. When he saw Samson himself standing beside Nancy’s bed, his eyes nearly popped out. "Captain Samson of HQ’s investigations?"

"Forgive me. I’m Jackson from Lindersville Branch."

Samson nodded. "Don’t worry. This young lady isn’t bragging for clout, and she has nothing to do with the case. We’ve already invited her to join us as a consultant, though she hasn’t accepted yet."

The viewers erupted in shock.

"Holy shit! Them big bosses are here!"

"She can understand animals? It'll be a shame if the government doesn't recruit her."

"Ms. Nancy, your future is much brighter than my balding head!"

Nancy, realizing Samson’s visit was serious, quickly said goodbye to the audience and ended the stream.

The officers placed the gifts on her nightstand, and Samson handed her some money.

Nancy weighed it—easily over a thousand dollars.

She instinctively waved it off. "Mr. Samson, I can’t possibly—"

He gave a kind smile. "Take it. You’ve helped us solve two major cases already, and now you’ve fallen ill. We feel guilty for not looking after your health sooner. Someone with your talent getting sick—that’s a real loss."

From his briefcase, he pulled out a contract and placed it before her with solemnity. "Nancy, here’s the offer. A monthly salary of ten thousand, full benefits, flexible schedule, bonuses for each case. Will you join Townsville HQ as our special consultant?"

Nancy flipped through the pages, her heart racing. The reward clauses nearly made her dizzy: Solve five cold cases and receive a domestic high-performance car. Solve ten major cases and the bureau would allocate her a family apartment.

"For those who make significant contributions, lifetime support and pension benefits at the expert level."

A house, a car, lifetime security.

Who could say no?

Nancy’s restraint vanished. She snatched up the pen and scribbled her name.

Handing the contract back with both hands, she grinned. "Mr. Samson, please take care of me from now on!"

Three mornings later, Nancy felt her strength fully restored and rushed to be discharged.

She had a car, a house, and lifetime benefits to fight for now!

Simon picked her up and brought her back to the staff dorm at the zoo. To her surprise, he had redecorated it completely.

The iron bed was now topped with a soft mattress and warm-colored sheets. The closet was filled with snacks Simon had stocked for her.

Nancy couldn’t hold back a giddy squeal like a prairie dog. "You’re the best!"

Simon froze at her words. He always felt he hadn’t done enough for her. He hadn’t expected his little sister to be so easily satisfied.

His sharp phoenix eyes lowered, hiding the sting of guilt. He gently ruffled Nancy’s hair.

"I’ll do even better from now on."

Nancy and Simon helped the interns at the zoo process their paperwork.

Leon jumped for joy when he got his certificate. "You’re amazing! Don’t worry, we won’t bail on you."

Nancy blinked curiously. "I didn’t hear from you for three whole days. With all the old keepers gone, are you sure you could handle things?"

"I’ve been here three months—that makes me practically senior staff. But yeah, we ran into a lot of tough problems." Leon scratched his head sheepishly.

Then he grinned. "But… we can always call in reinforcements."

Nancy tilted her head. "Reinforcements?"

Leon laughed. "We’re still seniors in college. Whenever something stumps us, we just call our professors. They guide us remotely."

The realization hit Nancy hard. The interns’ mentors were professors and associate professors at the veterinary school. If she had to consult them at a hospital, it would cost a fortune. And here, she was getting it for free!

Her heart soared, but she forced her smile down. "Not bad. Very clever."

Just then, Nancy’s phone buzzed violently. It was Jacob calling.

On the other end, his voice was frantic. "Ms. Nancy, where are you? I went to the hospital to pick you up but couldn’t find you!"

"Did you forget? Today’s the big job!"
