Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 46: The Scream In The Night
"Wait, so Nancy really can talk to animals?"
"Look at that rain. If anyone had been driving on the mountain pass, it would have been a death sentence."
"Hold on, if she was right about the rain, then what she said about the landslide..."
As the guests whispered among themselves, Errol’s secretary came sprinting into the hall, gasping for breath.
"Sir!"
"There's been a massive landslide on the mountain road!"
"The path down is completely buried. Mr. Foster’s contract... I’m afraid there’s no way he can sign it today."
Errol’s face went deathly pale.
The chatter in the banquet hall died instantly. It was as if someone had hit the mute button on the entire room.
What did a massive landslide mean? If you were lucky, you were merely trapped. If you weren't, your vehicle would be crushed and buried under tons of rock and mud, vanishing in an instant.
Every pair of eyes in the room turned toward Nancy.
The way they looked at her had shifted. Gone was the disdain, the skepticism, and the mockery. In its place was shock, reverence, and even a hint of fear. If she hadn't been so stubborn about blocking the road, people would likely have died today.
The girl at the center of the attention didn't seem to care. She was busy playing with the two plump sparrows resting in the flower basket.
The Goodman staff began distributing towels and room keys. As it turned out, Critters Villa had an entire wing dedicated to guest accommodations, built to the standards of a five-star hotel.
Nancy took her golden room key, feeling a surge of envy. She really wanted an estate of her own—one filled with animals. After the exhausting day, she washed up, messaged her brother, Simon, to let him know she was safe, and curled up in bed.
She slept straight through the evening until 12:30 AM.
Waking up with a gnawing hunger, Nancy picked up the bedside phone and ordered room service. The staff promised her food within thirty minutes. Having slept all afternoon, she was now wide awake.
She leaned over the edge of the bed to check on the two squirrels. The older brother was a model sleeper, curled into a fluffy ball. The younger brother, however, was flat on his back with his limbs spread out, exposing a round, soft belly. Nancy couldn't resist poking it. It was incredibly springy. The little squirrel didn't even wake up; he just let out a tiny twitch and scratched his tummy in his sleep.
Nancy’s heart melted.
Just then, the phone rang. "Your meal has reached the first floor, Miss. It will be at your door shortly."
Finally, food!
Nancy hurried to the door and peered down the hallway toward the elevators. Her room was on the fourth floor. She watched the indicator light climb. One... two...
It stopped at three.
Just as Nancy expected the elevator to continue its ascent—
A blood-curdling shriek erupted from the third floor, echoing through the entire building. It sounded exactly like a victim in a horror movie. Nancy felt goosebumps erupt across her skin.
Moments later, alarms blared. The dark silhouette of Critters Villa was suddenly flooded with light. Security guards armed with high-powered flashlights swarmed the guest wing, surrounding the building. Groups of five or six guards were stationed on every floor.
"A homicide has occurred on the premises," a guard announced through a megaphone. "For your safety, all guests must remain in their rooms and await police investigation."
Doors cracked open as nervous guests peeked out, but no one dared to step into the hall.
Nancy felt a chill run down her spine. Suddenly, her small apartment didn't seem so bad; maybe she didn't need a giant estate after all. A murder had happened, and the killer hadn't been caught. With the mountain road blocked, the perpetrator was likely still inside the villa.
The thought of a killer on the loose was terrifying. Nancy scooped up the two squirrels and held them close. It's okay, it's okay. I have two bodyguards. If only her brother were here.
She cracked her door open and came face-to-face with a patrolling guard.
"What exactly happened?" Nancy asked.
She pulled out her credentials—the Special Consultant badge Sam had issued her at the hospital. It granted her independent investigative authority.
The guard inspected the badge, his eyes widening in shock. This young girl was a special consultant for the police?
