Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 196: Swapping Keys
A girl so passionate and kind—someone who should have graduated smoothly from Townsville University's School of Art this summer to begin a brand-new chapter in her life—had met such a tragic end all because of a well-intentioned professional critique.
As they talked, the vehicle slowly rolled into the Townsville University campus. Captain Neil parked the car, and the two headed toward the Administration Building. Captain Neil needed to report the case details to the school officials in the conference room, and Nancy needed to collect her laboratory keys from Jensen, who was attending the same meeting.
The moment she stepped into the conference room, Nancy's gaze instantly locked onto an unexpected figure.
Ginnie was standing beside a man named Soren, directly opposite Jensen. She was smiling brightly as she handed over a manuscript. "Could you see if there's anything in this speech that needs improving?"
The man called Soren was the President of Townsville University. He had a square face and a slightly stout build, and at that moment, his face was full of approving smiles. "It's perfect! Ginnie, you'll be the first to speak at tomorrow's Opening Ceremony. You must deliver it beautifully."
Soren patted Ginnie's shoulder, his voice filled with anticipation. "I have high expectations of you." We're counting on your Instant-Light vaccine to truly put Townsville University's School of Animal Medicine on the map!"
The School of Animal Medicine at Townsville University was a newly established department, only five years old. Compared to the long-standing agricultural and forestry universities across the country, this program at Townsville was not well-known. Many veterinary hospitals and related companies preferred graduates from the older institutions, viewing them as more professional; consequently, a degree from Townsville's animal medicine program didn't carry much weight in the industry.
However, the school had been working hard to elevate the department's status and build a reputation. Now, seeing Ginnie become the director of Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital at such a young age and develop the Instant-Light vaccine—which was purportedly superior to others on the market—Soren saw a glimmer of hope. He intended to mold Ginnie into the "ace" and "celebrity spokesperson" for the department.
Hearing how much Soren valued her, Ginnie put on a humble smile. "You flatter me. I still have so much to learn from you and the other professors." Her words made Soren feel particularly satisfied, further convincing him that she was a talent worth cultivating.
The moment Soren saw Captain Neil enter, he stood up to greet him. "Captain Neil, thank you for your hard work! It's all thanks to your timely resolution of the case."
Captain Neil waved a hand. "It was no trouble. The killer was caught quickly, and the credit for that primarily goes to our police consultant, Nancy."
At that moment, Jensen was just handing the keys to the old laboratory to Nancy. Hearing Captain Neil's introduction, he stood up and spoke to Soren. "President, Nancy is the exceptionally talented graduate I mentioned to you before. She is the pride of our school."
Soren looked at Nancy and nodded in approval. "I've heard about your performance. You and your brother managed to take down both the thief and the murderer in one go!" he continued solemnly, "You've done the school a massive favor, and we won't treat you poorly. We've decided to grant you a 100,000 cash reward!"
If the campus murder had remained unsolved, the cost of suppressing the negative press alone would have exceeded 100,000. Nancy had truly saved the school a fortune.
Standing to the side, Ginnie felt a secret sneer when she heard "100,000 cash reward." To her, that amount was barely enough to buy a single handbag.
Nancy didn't appear particularly excited about the bonus. Instead, she asked with concern, "Thank you for the school's recognition. May I ask how the victim's family is doing?" That girl... it's such a tragedy. She should have had a wonderful life."
Soren sighed, his expression turning heavy. "The school has done its best to comfort the family, but the pain of losing a daughter... isn't something we can easily soothe. We have done everything we can. The family also expressed their gratitude to the police for the swift investigation."
Jensen then timely cut in, saying, "By the way, Soren, aside from the cash reward, didn't you promise to lease Laboratory A1 to Nancy? Did you bring the keys today?"
A flicker of embarrassment crossed Soren's face. He stammered, "About that... I already arranged for Ginnie to use Laboratory A1 this morning."
He explained somewhat awkwardly, "Ginnie came to see me yesterday afternoon saying she urgently needed to use Laboratory A1 for an emergency. I didn't think twice and handed over the keys..."
In reality, he was calculating that Nancy was just the director of a small zoo, and using such a high-end laboratory would be a waste of resources.
