Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 300: The Confrontation
Nancy already had a clear plan. Once the animal vaccine was a success, she wanted to study the vocal patterns of domestic animals like cats and dogs. By analyzing the wave characteristics of barks and meows, she could pinpoint exactly how they expressed different needs and emotions.
If she could turn those patterns into a curriculum, even people without her gift could understand what an animal wanted. It would change everything for K9 units and allow the police to bring in other specialized animals for search and rescue.
As the group climbed higher, they started seeing fresh signs of takins. Young trees were scarred from being rammed, and a nearby rock face was covered in large, damp lick marks.
Nancy checked the stone. "Salt licks. They need minerals, so they come here to supplement their diet."
Simon’s face hardened. "These are fresh. They were here a few minutes ago."
The light was fading when Chunk the bat shrieked as he dived toward them. "A herd is charging! Get out of the way!"
Right then, they heard it, the heavy thud of hooves and the sound of trees snapping like toothpicks. The smaller animals vanished into the brush, but the three humans were caught in the open.
"Takin herd!" Nancy yelled. "Get to that rock crevice!"
As they ran, a furious roar echoed through the woods. Nancy stopped dead when she heard what the animals were actually shouting.
"It’s those damn humans again! Always blaming us for the killings! I’ve got a temper, sure, but I’m no murderer! I’m sick of taking the fall for this!"
Eight takins rounded the cliff, grunting like a gang of brawlers.
"No more games! Let's show these humans what happens! Today, we're putting some holes in them!"
The ground shook with every step. Simon was ready to throw Nancy over his shoulder, but she stood her ground. Against the massive beasts, she looked like she was about to be crushed.
"Nancy!"
Simon lunged forward, shielding her with his body. The herd was less than ten meters away now, looking like living tanks with steam blowing from their nostrils and horns leveled right at them.
Jerome had doubled back when he realized they weren't behind him. He went pale at the sight and reached for his holster.
"Everyone, Stop!"
Nancy screamed at the top of her lungs. "I know you didn't kill that man! I'm not like the others! I'm here to clear your names! If you kill me, you’ll be branded as murderers forever!"
The entire herd slammed on the brakes. Their eyesight was poor, but their hearing was sharp, and Nancy’s voice cut right through their rage.
The lead bulls dug their hooves into the dirt, plowing deep furrows into the hillside as they skidded to a halt. The ones behind couldn't stop in time and slammed into the leaders.
"My damn head! Watch the horns!"
The terrifying charge turned into a massive pile-up. Bulls tripped over each other, legs tangling as they scrambled to stay upright. Dust swirled around them, leaving the massive animals looking completely stunned.
The lead bull tilted his head, his dark eyes wide with confusion.
"Wait... did this human just understand us? Did she say she’s going to help us?"
The herd looked at each other, the violence replaced by a weird, heavy silence. They just stared at Nancy, their faces a mix of shock and total bewilderment.
